Handprints of removed lacquer?

Featured Replies

Hi, my Skoda Fabia Mk1 has a number of hand prints in different places which I first thought were oil that I could clean off.

After putting it through the car wash and trying to get rid of them with WD-40, I'm having no luck.

Upon a closer look at the hand prints they look like the lacquer is completely removed or corroded away.

Can anyone suggest what I need to do to remove them? Is there anything I can apply to make it look better?

Many thanks

More likely to be people who have touched the car with suncream on.  Can leave marks which washing alone does nothing.  Essentially a good cutting polish will remove them.  I have seen and dealt with them in the past.

Isopropyl alcohol and a bit of elbow grease also works.

A light polish will do it. When you polish and can't see it any longer, give it another hit. They can be stubborn and appear to of gone but will gradually leach out.

It's common with hand creams and young childrens hands.

Thanks. Can suncream handprints really make it look like the lacquer is removed? I've got some Isopropyl alcohol, I'll give it a shot anyway.

Sun cream, moisturisers and natural oils in childrens hands (they stop producing these oils around 8-10 years old) all give this same appearance.

Polish off and put a little protection (ie wax, sealant or coating) which will stop the oils penetrating into the clearcoat.

It all sounds strange really but they are oils of sorts and will have an effect over time on the clearcoat.

They are usually localised to the B pillar and C pillar with the panel immediately to the rear of the C pillar taking the brunt but also check door handles and the front wings and either side of the leading edge of the bonnet (they are the most common contact points when entering a car and also when children play around the car they tend to hold or lean onto a panel when playing hide and seek, etc...).

Definatley try the P1 if the IPA doesnt work, had the same on mine and it shifted it easily by hand.

I used a light cleanser polish on a mates car after he had returned from a short seaside break with his kids. It came up a treat & the little prints were removed.

Had a little but of this on SWMBO's car this weekend.

The kids had left sun cream marks at the rear door.

Came up a treat with Gtechniq P1 by hand :)
