light switch - dipped beam indication

Featured Replies

Hi all

In my VRS when I rotate the light switch to auto, the auto symbol lights up. Rotating round to sidelights, the sidelight symbol lights up. But when I rotate it to dipped beam the sidelight symbol remains lit up and the dipped symbol never lights up. I'm assuming this is a gremlin of some kind. The headlights themselves work fine/ Has anyone else found this?

Thanks

Is this on the switch, or the dashboard?  I've never seen a car with a separate dipped beam light on the dashboard, it's always been the same one as for the sidelights (which, confusingly, is the sidelight symbol).  Then there's the (usually) blue main beam symbol that lights up when you turn them on.

This.  The "sidelight" symbol is the only symbol i've seen on any car to say the lights are on.

On the MkI Fabia there's no indication that the sidelights come on but if you turn the switch to dipped there's a green light that indicates the lights are on then the blue one for main beam.

Thanks

I'm fairly sure in all my past cars there was a green symbol that lit up on the dashboard when you switched the main lights on. It just seemed odd to me that there is no indication to the driver that the main headlights are on other than the switch being in the position. Also a bit weird having an auto light function that therefore gives you no idea what it is doing. It's sometimes hard in twilight to tell if the mains are on.

But if they're switched to Auto you'll see the "sidelight symbol" light up on the switch to show dipped beams are on...... can't see how they can make it more obvious...

i thought 'sidelight symbol' might mean sidelights were on. Sorry if that's a crazy assumption. Didnt know that obviously meant dipped beams

It's always the lights are on in every car i've ever owned.  Of course Auto lights only switch dipped beam on or off as if its dark enough to need lights then sidelights would be foolish as they're really just parking lights.

Its weird you guys are talking about this because when I leave mine on auto headlights I don't get any light on the dash at all. In fact the only way I notice its switched them on is when the satnav switches to night mode. I did wonder if that was supposed to happen.

When I switch them on manually I think a light comes on, but I'll have to check now.

By the way I have definitely owned cars which have separate dashboard lights for side lights and dipped beams. I think my Fiats did for a start

Yes this is a quirk of the VAG auto light system. On older cars I had the Auto symbol used to go from amber to green to indicate that the dipped beams were on....later cars the auto always remains amber but the sidelight symbol illuminates green when the lights are on.....sometimes can be difficult to tell whether they are on, particularly in bright sunlight.

Just leave it in AUTO and let it do its thing - life is too short to worry about if your lights are on dipped or sidelight! AUTO will not enable sidelights, so if the symbol is lit your dipped beams are on - simples.

Then mines definitely not working because I don't have a sidelights or a dipped beam light, whether the lights are on auto or 'ON'. oh well I guess I'll cope

Oh no - deja vu here!

Mine was like that and it wasn't a faulty switch, it was a wiring fault behind the dash. Do your LED downlighters work as they are on the same circuit, as well as the illumination for the switches on the centre console near the gearstick (Stop/Start, Mode Selection etc.)

sorry for the slow reply, and for the info. Not sure what you mean by LED downlighters, but the switches on the centre console definitely light up ok - vrs mode, etc). but nothing I've tried turns on a green light for the headlights (Full beam blue light works ok)

Are you looking at the slight switch? That's where the light it.

Right next to where AUTO is lit up in orange

lol, I wish I'd never started this now, you guys have got me all paranoid now about something which doesn't even matter :D  I'm well confused - I thought I was looking for a green light on the dash, but now you're saying it should be down where the auto switch is?

The light knob itself seems to be lit up with a bulb symbol (as I speak now it is obviously dark)  the lights indicating the position (Auto, sidelights, dip beam, foglights) are all illuminated with the same brightness as for example the electric window buttons, regardless of whether  turn the knob to auto, sidelights or dip beams. This would contradict what was said above which indicated there was no dipped beam light?

In my previous cars the light knob was lit up similar to this, presumably just so that you could find it, but there was an additional green light on the dash indicating whether the lights were on or off.

The sidelight symbol should illuminate quite a bit brighter when the sidelights or headlights are on, either manually or when on auto.

You should find that when the dipped beam has been activated that the symbol illuminates bright green on the rotary switch. When activated the dipped beam light fades in and then fades out when the lights go off.

Actually Skoda have been fitting the green 'dipped headlights' warning on the dash for years. It is only on the very latest models that they have removed it.

Those that say leave it in 'Auto' and forget about it in my experience tend to be those that drive around in the rain or fog with no lights on.

My auto headlights often turn off too early. They come on with the wipers (eventually) but go off when they stop. Quite often visibility is still reduced with spray etc. to warrant still having lights on.

The green light on the dash is useful as it is in the drivers line of sight. I can't say I've ever looked down at my headlight switch, or would want to when travelling at speed just to check if my lights are on.

I stopped using the Auto position, it's either off or all the way over to the right for dipped headlights...

Hi Silver1011

I don't seem to have an issue, if anything mine switch on a little early and stay on a little too long, but better safe than sorry!

If you leave them in AUTO it is no worse to leaving them turned off and forgetting to turn them on ..............

Also, AFS only works in AUTO!

At the end of the day it is the drivers responsibility to make sure they turn their lights on, so if the AUTO hasn't kicked in you can still turn them on manually.

I find the sat nav going in to night mode is the giveaway as to when the lights are on in dusk, dawn, rain & fog situations.

:notme:  Nope, I alwasy leave mine in Auto but will switch them on manualy in fog  When in Auto mine come on when it's raining.

I have mine set to 'early' so them on well before i gets dark and i have no issues with them switching off to soon.

I was being followed by a Mercedes C Class on the motorway the other week in on and off rain, the auto headlights were on and off more than the rain showers.

Just turn them on and leave them on :peek:

I thought I wasnt going mad because I was sure my previous skodas had this light on the dash.  You're quite right about the lights on the switch, but i have the lights turned down to minimum and the difference is barely noticeable. hardly clear and why would you not then make the dipped symbol brighter too when they are on? oh well, whatever.

It is a design flaw to be honest, because i like the auto lights and they work well but I also want to be 100% sure whether they are on or off, for the reasons listed above. basically i prefer the light on the dash lol.

Looks like you'll need to swap your MkIII for a MkII then :D
