Golf GT TDI

Featured Replies

A friend is looking into buying a second hand VW Golf GT TDI (it is a big step up from his first idea of an Astra Vxr!).

He is looking at the 05 - 07 sort of age range. With an approximate £5k budget.

I believe they are 2.0 tdi engines with, on paper 170 horses. Is this a PD170 engine?

I don't know engine codes particularly well!

Are these reliable engines as long as they are serviced regularly?

If anyone has any past experience, do's don't s, advice, what to look for, tips, which parts wear/self destruct at what mileage etc, they would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance :-)

Think it's a PD170 but I'm no expert! There's been a dpf issue for a few I think hmmm ask in the Octy secrion

How many miles a year does he do? If it's less than about 12k he might as well go for the gti instead, because the saving in fuel won't be very significant.

It is the pd170, yes.

They are known to be very reliable, although not considered quite as good as the 140 i believe. Even though theres only a few differences

They do 2 models a pd140 (what my mates got) and a pd170. From what he's said the 140 is better for tuning/playing with. His 140 is fast not as fast as a skoda tho :D

I think the 140 has no dpf which is good

I've yet to talk to a PD170 owner who hasnt had issues, mainly DPF related. 140 is the better engine, or stretch to a CR motor, or as others said, if he isnt doing the miles a GTI.

Yeah. The way is choose between the 2 is mileage.

High miles and need economy, diesel.

Low miles n just want a fun practical car, gti.

He is clocking a fair few miles hence why he is looking at diesels, but wants something in the middle ground I.e. Something with a bit of poke.

What are the differences? Must be something major to make 30 more horses?

I see, I doubt he'd want to play with or tune it. But good to know in case the opportunity arises!

Fingers crossed!

Do you know if the pd140 has a dpf fitted Matt?

Are the CR engines fitted to later models, I hear they are more progressive acceleration than the sudden kick from a PD engine?

Thank you all in advance for the replies,

I wouldn't mind talking him into an Octavia VRS but he seems pretty set on a GtTDI or an A3.

The difference between the 140 and 170 is turbo and mapping I think. The CR engines were 2008/9ish onwards, much smoother, no dpf issues. The PD140 has no dpf as far as I know but the CR does.

From what i remember, the differences are minimal but enough to make a different.

Different map and turbo, flywheels different, water pump is different, dpf and injectors.

There may be a few more bits but its been a while since i looked into it myself

My brother has been looking at the exact same car, Golf GT 140 TDI from about 2009 onwards and from what I've read and heard from others it's a pretty solid unit. The ones with 170bhp were just the Golf GTD's I thought? But all the 140's he was looking at said they DPF's on autotrader?

Yes, a lot more VW cars have DPFs so you need to look more carefully. Skoda didn't get them to keep them down market.

Avoid the PD170 as it had injector issues as well as DPF ones.

I'd avoid any PD with a DPF.

Get a PD130 1.9 :) (but check for DPF on Audi/VW).

2009 > is a newer shape to what the OP is looking at

2009 > is a newer shape to what the OP is looking at

Oops, my apologies, must have just skimmed that bit and not read it properly!

2009 > is a newer shape to what the OP is looking at

Where does it say that?

I can only see '05-07' in the opening post?

That sort of era will be the PD wont it, but later on 09-10 will be the CR, so it makes a big difference aha.

Upto 2004-2009 was mk5 golf

2009 on was mk6

Then mk7 came in 2011 or 12 i think

But to be fair the mk5/6/7 are so alike its more a facelift imo. Nothing startling at all

Apart from the differences between a PD and CR.

The mk7 is a different chassis

But im on about the look of the car.

They all look alike. Nothing WOW about them in the slightest.

Millsy was saying he's brother was looking at Golfs and the 170's are GTD's and the GT's are 140, which is correct for the MK6 (2009 onwards). The shape the OP is looking at they'd all GT's, both the 140 & 170. You're correct about engine changes, as per my post (no 10).

MK5 (2004-2008)

2.0 PD140 GT (no DPF) OR 2.0 PD170 GT (with DPF)

MK6 (2008-2013)

2.0 CR140 (with DPF) OR 2.0 CR170 (with DPF). In this shape the GTD is full on gangsta, looks like a GTI, wide bodykit, tartan seats and flat bottom wheel. The GT is just a mild sport trim.

Not been in a GTD or indeed any pd170 or CR170's.

Had experience with a pd140 and a cr140 dsg though.

CR seems a lot more refined. Faster, smooth and always willing to rev out.

The PD Seemed abit more agricultural compared. Still a good engine, but i much prefered the CR

Yeah thats my experience too. By luck I drove a CR140 GT this week for a few hours. Was far more refined than my Fabia would ever be! Easy to drive, nice seats but nothing special. I've driven a CR170 but it was a Octavia vRS estate so hard to compare lol.

Yeah!

Dad used to have a 2010 golf sportline (you cant get the GT in estate form) with the CR140 DSG.

Should of kept it really. It was fully specced up, the big sunroof n all the extras on it, suede seats etc. was a properly nice car. Should of kept it really.

I drove a 140 GT TDI of that age before getting an Octy.

The only thing GT about the GT TDI are that it has alloys. It's just a trim level.

Solid but dull, and the interior is a very dreary black on black.

If he's expecting a neon boy racer in the same vein as the VXR he might get a bit of a shock.

Get him to look at a MK2 Octy vRS ....
