Looking for a 'classic' car from the late 70s

Featured Replies

I was going to post this thread one day and everyone is classic car mad at the mo, so now is as good a time as any.

In the next couple of years, I would like to buy a 'classic' car registered in 1979, although I will extend that to T or V reg. There are no real requirements as such but I suppose it should be practical, a 4 seater I'm afraid and put a smile on my face when I drive it. Unfortunately I'm conscious that the late 70s were not a good time for car design and many cars I can think of had the sort of looks that could only be loved by a mother. So I'm looking for suggestions.

I don't think I want something to obvious like a mini or a beetle but I don't want something completely obscure that will cost me a fortune to buy replacement wipers let alone mechanical parts so relatively affordable to work on and an active 'scene' would be helpful.

Budget would not be very big but I don't think I can put an exact figure on it as it will depend on what the car is. After all they tend not to lose value like a more modern car so I can try to balance up front cost with retained value.

Good suggestions but I think I want to look/feel older or a bit more special.

ALL performance Fords are excellent news, with a ready supply and flow of parts generally speaking.

Trouble is, tidy unmolested ragged bagged and bob tailed performance Fords are a little bit thin on the ground, and if you do find one, expect to pay MONSTER money for it.

Just said that you numb nuts.

What sort of budget are we talking here, 'cus a car from 1979 ( why so specific btw.) could cost anything from £150 to the sky's the limit

Luckily I'm not necessarily looking for a sports or performance car although I should say that an early Porsche 928 would be my choice if I didn't have to think too much about what it costs to buy or run.

I'm not really a fan of the mk 2 escort. It's got that 70s car look.

A dodgy reply from someone on ebay :notme::rofl:

'Registered 1979 but will extend that to T or V'. IIRC T reg ran from August '78 and V from August 1979 so those are the prefixes you want anyway.

Triumph 2500?

Straight six engine and plenty of room.

Well a car registered in 1979 WILL have that 70's look unfortunately.

In baby poo yellow? No thanks.

Triumph Dolomite is more like it. Just not in brown. Budget? well I consider £5,000 to be small in classic car terms for something that is going to run for a bit. I'm not looking for a project. it should be in reasonable condition not perfect and set to run for a few years.

Really? :notme:

But a '78 T or '80 V would be ok as well. I could just claim it was a 79 whatever.

Yes, a Rover SD1 is the right year but I'd much prefer a P6 if you catch my drift.
