Door Mirror

Featured Replies

the mirror glass on the right hand side has come off. fortunally Ive got the complete glass :)

Any one got any ideas on how to re attach said mirror?

Would glue or sickey pads do at all?

Mine came off over a year ago, caught it so sudnt need a replacement glass.

I just stuck it back on with some decent 3M double sided sticky pads, been fine ever since.

Just make sure both surfaces are clean and warm before attaching the pads

Cheers John for the heads up :)

My nearside mirror glass is stuck on with superglue and the other side mirror with araldite. Both work fine.

I think you can specialised double-sided sticky pads for this job in accessory shops. Meantime you still have the interior and LH mirriors, so the car is road legal.

I don't think I'd trust sticky tape. Both mine are re-stuck with 5 minute Devcon epoxy resin. Held in place with masking tape while setting.

I used extra strong double sided carpet tape.

Remember the mirror glass is heated so you need a material that will allow the heat to pass through it from the heating elements to the glass.

It is a common complaint on the MkII Octavia (search for similar threads, there are lots). Due to the very low cost of a brand new glass and the backer (that contains the heating element) - it's these two parts that fail and seperate, a lot of people have just bought new.

Lots and lots listed on eBay etc.

Personally as there was nothing wrong with my mirror (I too noticed it wobbling and shaking during driving before it was able to fall off and smash!) I didn't see the point in binning it. I already had the tape in the garage so the repair was free (and so far very effective).

Seems a common problem; across the VAG group - seen this on Skoda, VW and Audi mirrors now.

I have re-attached with 3M double sided tape before; but did replace the glass plus backing eventually.

Previous comments have said that more regular use of the heater element on the mirrors can help

longevity of the standard adhesive; but i have no real evidence to support this if i'm honest.

Hope you get it sorted.

Haha, I've heard the opposite, those that leave the heated mirrors on permanently tend to invite earlier failures! (Easily done on the Octavia due to the poorly marked mirror adjustment switch).

However, we hardly use ours (probably only a handful of times since the car was new back in 2008), and our drivers side mirror failed recently, so your theory samuir1974 holds up well!

Due to the very low cost.... aha.

You obviously haven't tried sourcing one of the auto dimming door variety!

Yes - same here - hence why i think there may be something in it..... but i'll see how long the replacement lasts with altered usage regime!

I don't know, I use my heated mirrors almost every morning (except in the mid summer) and the glass still fell out of both of them!

They both came loose after the car had been parked all day in direct sunlight on a particularly hot day, so it would suggest that heat is more detrimental to the adhesive than lack of heat.

The trick with using the very strong epoxy adhesive is to not apply it as a layer - it doesn't need that kind of strength, it isn't an aircraft wing!

I used small dobs about 1/4" diameter, spaced every 2" or so around the periphery, and in diagonal lines of blobs across the backing, so there is a lot of grip but also a lot of unglued area. The heating of the glass is exactly as effective as before. The loosening of the originals happened ages ago and has not been repeated since.
