DSG reluctant to change up from 3rd to 4th

Recommended Posts

Long story and not yet solved....

Hi, My Skoda Octavia diesel DSG 2006 reg has been faultless except for a cruise control stalk being replaced. I have now done 62k miles. I parked my car for a ten day holiday and on my return the gearbox was reluctant or hesitant to change from 3rd to 4th gear. I took it into the garage and they carried out an error code check... No faults found. The gearbox oil has been replaced. The symptoms are that in auto and approx 25mph the gearbox will not change up into 4th although it will for about the first fifteen minutes of driving and after that it is intermittent. The Skoda dealership suspected a mechatronic unit, but having searched the Internet , mechatronic unit faults do not correlate with mine. Also the dealership wish to charge me in excess of £800 to exchange but cannot guarantee that this will solve the problem !!!

They have reset the system to manufacturers settings but still not cured.

I can overcome the problem by changing up into 4th manually.

Another comment on the Internet suggested they had a similar problem and it turned out to be the wheel detectors on the ASR, but to my non mechanical mind I couldn't see the connection.

So finally I would be pleased if someone has had and rectified a similar problem or has any advice, as I am reluctant to go ahead with a mechatronic replacement and discover that this is not the problem.

My apologies, I will try to be more precise...

When the DSG goes into 3rd and is reluctant to go into 4th, I can accelerate until the engine is very high revving and then it will eventually go into 4th, hence the reason I use manual when this happens.

The DSG has only just been reset by an authorised dealership, so I presume it is correct.

Grateful for your feedback.

Hi Gadgetman,

I tried as you suggested resetting to learn mode, the symptoms are slightly different but the problem is still the same.

When the car is cold the gear changes are pretty well perfect, after ten minutes or so it will stick in third until either I apply a LOT more throttle or manually change up to fourth. This is not consistent as sometimes it will revert to pretty near perfect gear changes again and then when you think it is solved, back comes the hesitancy to change up.

To my mind it feels like some sort of speed or temperature sensor, hence the reason I am reluctant to spend out £800 on a replacement mechatronic unit which MAY not cure the problem.

I am going to persevere with it for the moment to see if it improves or gets worse, it is drive able but just annoying. Next service is due in November so will get the dealership to check for fault codes again.

Thanks for the advice.

My gearbox will go into 4th at about 25mph on a very light throttle/flat road.

I'm with you on a dodgy sensor. It might still be reporting values within range (and so no fault code) but the values may be off from the real ones hence the gearbox getting a bit confused.

I think you may need someone with VCDS to have the laptop connected while you take it for a spin and log some of the info from the gearbox (speed and throttle position etc).

Phil

Hi,

I had exactly the same symptoms on my 1.9 dsg last year, it changed 1st 2nd and 3rd okay and could only get higher gears manually, the fault in my case was an implausible signal from one of the rear speed sensors which ment replacing the hub as the sensor ring is fixed on the back of the hub, rust under the sensor ring pushes it away from the hub and it can rub the ABS sensor causing damage yo that as well,

Hopefully you have saved a few people a few quid, re the mechatronic unit.

New hub and fitting still expensive though?????????

Are there any preventative measures that can be taken, that you are aware of????

Amazed that the dealers cannot suss problems like these (re post one).

I used a genuine hub, if I remember correctly it was about £120, fairly easy diy fit, it seams like the magnetic ring on the back of the hub is a weak link, having said that my car is on an 07 plate with 165K on the clock, both rear hubs have gone the same way in the last 18 months, the first one took out the ABS sensor as well,

Hope this helps Woodmic and others.

Hi thanks for your reply I will be checking the rear speed sensors will keep everyone posted as I also don't believe its a DSG issue and don't want to waste money on replacing a Mechatronic unit.

Thanks for your help

Those bloody hubs and the ABS rings! Cause problems all over the place on these cars.

To give an idea on costs I had to pay £300 for both sides of rears on a mk5 golf.

Fingers crossed you get it sorted as in sure this will be much cheaper than the other supposed fix!

Checked the rear speed rings and abs sensors the speed sensor was rusted away in parts causing wear to the abs sensor on the nearside, replaced both units and now all is fine with the gearbox. Please get them checked before spending out on a Mechatronic unit. total cost was £170 instead of a wasted £1100 quoted ata gearbox specialists thanks for the help in solving this issue

I have just fixed the same problem.

After putting computer on car and doing a live data why driving.

I found that the rear right speed was jumping up to 40mph why I was only driving at 20mph.

There was I choice to change hun with built in pick up ring or the easy one was the sensor.

So you can guess what I did.

Anyway it's fixed and driving good.

One other thing is nearing in my diff on its way out so guess my next job is taking box out and splitting it.

Merckenzie.

Ye 1 thing I have done on a lot of customers A3 and A4 are rear hubs.

The pick up ring breaks up usually you get lights on dash and gives you something to go of.

But this A3 of mine didn't have any.

It was only because I put it on computer.

Once last sataday the traction control light come on.

+1 for the fault being the ABS rings on the rear hubs corroded, had the same issue on my 07 eatate at about 120 K miles, replaced both hubs and the problem was fixed,  wheel bearings were just about fubar  by then anyway,  DSG went on till 185 K and still okay when I sold it.

Hi, just joined & hope it's not ok for me to on here to ask about my vw touran dsg problem?

i have the same problem, my dsg not changing into 4th at 25mph, it works fine for the first 15 minutes or so.

its a facelift 2010 vw touran with 55000 miles

when you say hub ? What are you referring to ?

cheers, lee

It could be the same problem. If the engineering is similar (the abs ring and sensor set up) on the rear hubs of the Touran to that of the Oct II.

The hub is the metal housing behind the disc rotor, that carries the bearing and effectively allows the wheels turn. Google search "car hub", "car rear hub" and select images. Will give you an idea.

Exact set ups differ between different vehicles, manufacturers and front to rear and if the car is FWD or 4WD, and ancillaries in place like abs set up etc.

Hi there I have a3 dsg that was the same only change to 4th and 5th after I booted it and red lined it.

Lucky I work in a garage and own vag com.

Live data it was the rear sensor not the hub but I have also done meny a3 and a4 hubs the ring rotting away.

If you no anyone with snap on you can also live data on them but only to around 25mph or 30mph.

The other week the other side went so both have been changed another thing it every now n then the abs light will come on n go off.

You can buy them around £8 of eBay or pick up from Liverpool.
