Tyre pressure for full-load. Is the load on-board yet?

Featured Replies

I'm taking the Roomy away camping for the first time and checking tyre pressures.

I got to thinking. When inflating for full-load, does the 3.2bar on the rear (1.4 TDI 80) apply when it's loaded or not.

Methinks the load is on, but would welcome opinions.

Jim

This thread would sugest the 3.2bar is the fully loaded presure.

Hi Jim,

My fuel flap shows that 3.2 bar pressure when needing to carry 5 people and max luggage, I guess it would still be safe to drive solo with max load pressures, ride will be harsher, perhaps allow longer stopping distances as unladen tyres likely to be domed up so bit less contact patch?? And no violent cornering for the same reason?!!

+ChrisTids 'reckon you're right.
I going to try and remember to check the pressure before and after unloading at the weekend, to see how much it drops when the load is removed.

Hi Jim, yes 3.2 fully loaded. If your going away for say a week, just go back to normal pressures after you get there, then back up when your coming home. The pressure in the tyre stays the same no matter how much you carry. Have a good holiday. :sun:  :rain:  :cocktail:

NZ100. Do you mean that the additional load squeezing down on the tyres has a negligible effect on the tyre pressure? I somehow thought that the load would partly increase the pressure anyway, though more air/pressure would still be needed to keep the tyre in shape.

Good advice about returning to normal while away and unpacked. I imagine caravan towers sliding all over the road while they're at a site because they're still set up for heavy load.

Hi Jim, yes tyre pressure stays the same whether you have a centurion tank in the back, or a box of feathers, I know that's over the top but it gets the point over. I suggest you put the tank on a trailer if you are taking one. :D  Clive.

Got it. Cheers.

It's Roomy but not that big. 'reckon I'll need to get those Thule 757 feet and put the topbox on for the Centurion.

Hi Jim, my 1.9tdi Roomster with 195/55 R15 tyres has fuel-flap pics of 3 people and one suitcase at the lower pressure settings, and 5 people and 3 (or more?) suitcases needing the higher settings. So supposing your "daily jaunts whilst away" loading is midway between the greater and lesser loadings, I can't see a problem in re-setting the tyres to halfway-house pressures, so long as you reinflated them to "max load" for your return home from holiday, and then re-adjusted them to the lower setting after giving them a few hours to cool to ambient temperature (they get warm while running, which temporarily raises the pressure a bit more than you'd set, so that heat generated by running laden needs to dissipate so as to give you a baseline pressure reading, from which to adjust down to your lower setting.)

BTW, tyre pressures that were set during a warm day, will drop in pressure during the night if it goes very chilly, but then expand back up again when the atmosphere warms up next day.

And if you've set them in warm weather, but we then get a cold snap, it's best to check them again as pressure can have dropped several pounds per square inch due to the air contracting as it cools.

Enjoy your holiday; going anywhere nice?

We just did three days near Lyme Regis.

The Roomy is a Tardis, particularly with the middle seat removed. Still going to get the Thule feet so we can use the topbox and give the children a bit more space.
