Turbo issue and recommendations

Hi all, I'm the proud owner of an 05 octavia vrs, 103k on the clock , I'm having an issue with the turbo , it keeps behaving erractically, easiest way to discribe it is, example , I'm doin 40 mph in 3rd gear , revs are at around 2500 I accelerate then around the 3000 rpm mark the turbo kinda slips and hesitates and shoots upto 3500 - 4000 then back down to 3000 mark an then takes off as normal, this happens in all gears but if I take off from stationary and accelerate hard an get the turbo kicking in early on it will happily go through the gears and turbo operates perfect . So very stumped and any advice will be very welcome and I'm in manchester so any recommendations for any turbo specialists will also be welcome, sorry for the mega long thread

Could do with getting it scanned with vcds to see if theres any fault codes. Where abouts in manchester are you?

In the meantime try running with the MAF disconnected to see if things improve. Just a case of unplugging it. Simple to try and costs nothing to rule out

Thanks for the quick reply, and not that technically minded enough to disconnect the maf to be honest , when I bought the car seller said he had a fault code and it shown system too lean bank 1, but no light on the dash since I bought it 5 weeks ago, and I'm near manchester airport

Most likely the breather pipe system has split causing that fault code.

Behind the battery in the engine is the airbox and on the pipe leaving the airbox is the MAF sensor and its plug. Dead easy

Does it not just sound like the clutch slipping from your description of the revs flaring up and then the clutch grips again, the revs drop and away you go?

Hi had a friend round, unplugged the maf sensor and just took it out for a spin and the asr lite has now come on and stayed on haha, but the car is 80 % better , sounds daft and hard to explain! but no I'm certain it isn't the clutch as wen I take off from a standing start and accelerate hard through the gears it's fine , nothing slips! it's more when I'm driving in low revs and accelerate slowly then near the 3000 mark it's shooting up ... Just going to plug it in with a code reader so update you in 30 mins

Forgot to mention the asr light will come on but its just because the maf is unplugged

Sounds like a slipping clutch to me too.

Thanks brownbarge, and yeah it's been turned off now with this vag code reader, only fault it's showing is what the previous owner mentioned, system too lean bank 1 , if it was the clutch I'm certain it would slip for certain when I taking off quick and giving it some stick, and it doesn't , if I'm goin through the gears quick it works perfect, so any ideas as this code of system too lean ? Guessing that could be maf sensor ? But still doesn't solve my original problem ... But overall loving the vrs , and fingers crossed I can get it sorted some how

Symptoms described are exactly the same as when the clutch went on a mikiv Golf I owned a few years ago. It never slipped in 1st or 2nd or when going quickly through the gears, but slipped in 3rd, 4th, & 5th under load around 3krpm. Hope I'm wrong for your sake as £550 I had to fork out for supply & fit of a new clutch kit & DMF was a blow.

You need to check the breather pipes under the inlet manifold its a very common problem and brings up the code you have for system lean bank 1

As said above, sounds like the clutch is slipping

Without sounding too stupid, if I'm wrong an it did turn out to be the clutch, what can I do other than wait for the issue too get worse ? Ie any way of checking it other than my description of what I'm saying is happening already,

And just to be clear the revs shooting up never happens straight after changing gear and letting the clutch up, it's just when your driving and cruising along and put the accelerator down the car picks up fine until it hits around 3000 rpm it does it, if I don't get to the bottom of it can anybody recommend any skoda independent specialists or any local good manchester places to take it regards too the system running lean part, thanks guys

So you are saying that when you boot the car this doesn't happen?  If so then it can't be the clutch, as that would generally slip when you booted it, and be fine if you accelerate gently.  Your description appears to be the reverse of this....

 

However that said if the revs increase then speed must increase, unless the clutch is slipping.  Please confirm if the speed increases when the revs increase or not.

Yes that's exactly what i mean, drive it hard and it doesn't do it, and yes definetly speed does still increase when the revs shoot up that's why it feels like the turbo slipping , it's hard to explain totally but the revs can shoot up to the 3500rpm mark whilst accelerating from say 40 mph in 3 rd gear , it gets too always pretty much bang on the 3000 rpm before it slips and shoots upto 3500 then back down to 3000 rpm when the needle does the wild drop there's a slight hesitation then it carries on picking up speed , hope that makes sense , as I said its difficult to explain, but gonna have to get it booked in somewhere soon as it's driving me mad ,

Hi all, quick update Cars been in a garage today and mechanic said the turbo is definetly leaking oil, any recommendations on where to go next, ie, any body know best place for a replacement and get it done, the garage today is far too busy and said I'd be better goin a specialist , guessing not a cheap fix !!!
