New dashboard. Erk.

Featured Replies

My Yeti's in for a new dashboard today - since delivery it's had an annoying creak from the chrome ring around the speedo. Garland Skoda in Aldershot (the supplying dealer) had two goes at fixing it and failed (I don't think they even looked at the car the first time it was in - so not buying my next one from them). It had its first service at Ridgeway in Reading a couple of weeks ago and I asked them to have a look - they seem confident they can fix it.

I'm still not overly happy that it was delivered in this state, and I'm very disappointed in Garland's slack attitude to fixing it. I'll report back on how well Ridgeway do - I'm not overly confident as a couple of services ago they "forgot" to change the brake fluid and then forgot on the second visit.

Dashboard swap is straightforward, if they have not asked take all your car keys as they need to be paired with the immo in the new dashboard.

It's an easy fix using CRC Silicone dry spray with a 'straw'.

Fixed mine v easily.

Me too.......touch wood

I agree - Silicone spray with a 'straw' to guide the fluid direction fixes the problem. Just a quick squirt around the top of the dials and mop up any overspray. Did mine about 3 months ago and not heard a squeak since.

Well, apparently it's all done and on its way back...

I hope it all ok now, but you might want to order in some silicone spray just in case.

Amazing that they would go to all that trouble when there would be no guarantee of a fix when all it needed was a 'lube'.

That dealer should be nominated for a award.....don't know which one though.

It's an awful lot better - still a slight creak over big bumps so I'll get some spray as well. But it was done quickly and tidily and so on so a big improvement over previous experiences.

No new rattles or squeaks ?

I'd always be nervous of having something like that replaced, as I doubt the wiring etc ever gets put back quite the way it was by the factory.

Sounds like you've done OK though.

For reference, the silicone trick worked for me too :)

Nope - nothing is worse, and the bit that was bad is much, much better. It's only on really big bumps (which I mostly avoid) that there's any creak.

I think they only replaced the instrument module, as there was a teeny bit of scrap paper left in the top bin when I checked.

I'm surprised they chose the hard way to address an easily fixed problem.

Unless it's a modified part there would be no guarantee of a fix as well.

And this morning it started creaking a bit again. Back of the net!

I'll get some spray - and I acknowledge that I should have listened when everyone told me to do it that way in the first place - sorry!

You don't need to apologise, it's difficult to believe they actually replace it as it's such a cheap plasticky item that lends itself to an easy fix.

Same problem here. Seems incredibly common, and to be fair it's the only slight niggle that's shown up in 6 months! Being utterly useless at any form of DIY, however simple, could some kind soul please tell me exactly where to spray it please?

If you have a can with a 'straw', fit the straw to the spray top and squirt just above the chrome binacle in the gap between the binnacle and the dashboard cowl. The spray will spread around and you may find some drip out of the dash around the edges which can be mopped up with kitchen towel. I did both rev counter and speedo binnacles although most of the noise seemed to be coming from the speedo one. A quick drive around will soon show whether you have sprayed enough. I started with a small amount and then did it a second time before the squeaks were eliminated completely. Been OK now for several months.

I do a little bit - I asked, people told me, I did something different!

Thanks for that! No chance of causing any long term damage with the spray?

You shouldn't need much

And

Flex the dash cowl to find out just when it's been fixed.

I absolutely agree. You don't need much and I haven't noticed any problems caused by the spray. It is only a lubricant.

I've ordered some of that there spray, and will report back.

Just a bit concerned about using sprays like this on plastics. Need to be very sure that they aren't going to degrade the plastic. Hopefully the product labels will show which ones are OK to use.

No 'residual' problem with mine, you need so little also.
