engine turns off then wont restart without brake cleaner

Featured Replies

HI peeps. My octavia vrs pd170 shuts off while braking, turns over but wont start. Spray brake cleaner and it starts then its fine after that all day. Done it twice now

Sounds like it could be a fuel problem.

Any pattern as to how much fuel onboard when it fails ? Could it be the tank pickup pump ?

Fuel filter been changed at all ?

Plenty of fuel on board. Stalled again as i was driving up hill in 3rd, it was struggling because of low revs and stalled again when braked. Started with brake cleaner. Now it will be fine even if i turn it on off until it stalls again

Car misfires in idle and upto 1300rpm. Do you think its the shoddy injectors that we're recalled.

A scan for fault codes would be a good starting point.

Has the car had the injector recall done?

Not that I know of. It's an ex cop car with 170k miles. I've had endless problems with it. Dpf removed, engine changed, injectors are from old engine

That could make things a bit more complicated.  Why was the engine changed?

A fault scan would be the easiest starting point though.

Tandem pump would also be common between braking and fuel delivery could there be an issue there ?

Will it stall at idle if you hold your foot hard down on the brake pedal?

Engine changed due to cracked head. Vcds not showing any fault codes

In the "old days" it was said that diesels became addicted to sprays such as "Easy Start".

In actual fact using a spray such as ether or, I guess, brake cleaner, causes detonation which would either coke up or damage the injector. The engine gets progressively more difficult to start.

Be careful with brake cleaner as it will start to rely on it.

Had similar issues with my old car. Carry out a drip test. You may find it will need new injectors

Sorted fellas thnx. Mechanic bypassed the fuel filter to see if it will fix the problem. Problem sorted so got a new fuel filter+housing.
