Some Internet pages wont load

Featured Replies

im using win7 and firefox, i find a few sites just hang when trying to load, argos and currys are two of the more common ones im trying to use. i can usually get the homescreen on but once i try to search i just have the little spinning disc and nothing happens

these work fine on other pc's in the house, its just mine. I've cleared cache, tried a fresh install of firefox yet it still happens

any ideas?

Who is your ISP?

BT?

This rings a bell. I had a similar issue with Firefox and the Which? Website. I think it was something to do with hardware acceleration in the end.

From memory the setting is buried in options somewhere.

yes im with BT but kiddie protection is off

the other pcs work fine so i cant blame BT

it must be something on this pc coz its as bad with opera and IE, just tried them both

Big problem I have had with BT is that their DNS servers are dreadful (busy pages take forever to load as each bit of advertising etc needs a DNS lookup), and after a long discussion with BT customer support, their suggestion was to go and buy a hub that wasn't a BT one...

You can see if it's a problem by just changing the DNS settings on your PC

Might not be that but definitely worth a try

Any joy?

Ah. Didn't refresh :-(

You tried using a different browser?

yes mate, usually i only use firefox but ive tried opera and IE and although they 'sometimes' load a page or two, ultimately the same happens with them all :(

Might be worth checking to see if your PC is set up to use a proxy

(assuming W7)

Network and sharing centre - internet options (bottom left) - connections tab - LAN settings then ensure that Proxy server is unticked

Then worth checking on the browsers themselves as the browsers can be set to override the system settings.

(I'm working on the basis that your OS is patched to the latest version, your apps are all updated and you've got your antivirus updated and operating too)

It may be worth installing MalwareBytes from malwarebytes.org and running a scan as it could be a browser hijack

There is a particular bit of spyware/adware that some otherwise legit programs install that can cause these problems.

Do a search of your system for any files/folders called "conduit"; not all AV or MW programs pick it up as malicious, because despite its very dodgy install behaviour, no one has ever been able to point to it and say it has done anything malicious, except slow down internet connections and cause the odd time-out.

@ gyp, no proxy as far as i can tell and yes im using win7 fully updated with ESET fully updated and malwarebytes updated

@ martin, i run it once a week but just to be sure ive run it now to double check

@ GG, search found nothing

this has been going on now for some months and its really only argos and currys thats giving me an issue, maybe others but i dont use many sites. there must be something common with those 2 sites that my pc doesnt like but can i heckers find it :(

See if you can access the websites with Java disabled (use NoScript); it might be an ad server has been blacklisted on the one PC and is stopping the page from loading correctly.

(Ads are the main source of web infections these days - I have them disabled by default).

If that works, you can selectively allow scripts until you find which one breaks the webpage - then permanently black it.

I "cured" this problem on mu laptop by disabling the flash plugin.

You can re enable it on a site by site basis as necessary.
