Ipad1 IPad2

Featured Replies

Looking for a little knowledge from those who are likely to know.

My Laptop has died and need to replace it with something as phone's screen is just to small.

What are the benefits of a IPad 2 over an Ipad 1?

Not interested in taking pictures on it, thats why have camera's.

Is it quicker? if so by much? (bearing in mine that laptop that has died was running XP and very old lol)

Generally just day to day surfing any major advantages between either?

Cheers folks

Go ipad 3 or newer, 1 ' s and 2 ' s are getting very long in the tooth now and have a poor (by modern standards) screen resolution.

Money unfortunatly at the moment dosnt allow 3 or newer :rain:

I don't think the iPad 1 supports the latest, never mind upcoming OS.

I was also advised to get a 3 or newer due to the software, but it does depend on the planned usage.

If you've got plans to use the iPad instead of the laptop, you will need the 3/4 due to the flash player needed. Or so I have been told?!?!

Just picked up a reconditioned Ipad3 16g wi-if/3G from a local shop for £200 and a 1TB WD external hard drive for extra memory for times when I don't want to pick up the bulky Mac Pro.

What about an Asus memo pad or Samsung galaxy tab in 10" guise? Both have sd card slots so you can expand the storage

iPad 2 will be ok for surfing the internet and playing games and you tubes and it is compatible with ios8 iPad 1 is not iPad 3 and newer has a better screen. If a website will not play on a ipad 2 coz of the flash player it will not work on the iPad 3 or 4.

iPad 1 is discontinued and unsupported. If the 2 still is it won't be for much longer. Apple don't give timelines for retirement they just drop the old ones quietly.

Unless your laptop was a Mac you'd probably find getting a Win8 tablet more useful and a similar price (not the overpriced Surface tablet).

Going 1 to 2 you got the same resolution screen, but a slightly thinner shell, and a much faster processor. 2x as much RAM IIRC too.

Going 2 to 3 you get a retina screen

Going 3 to 4 you get a minor performance boost and the change to a lightning connector.
Going 4 to Air you get a smaller bezel plus performance boost.

Going Air to Air 2 you'll probably get a thumbprint scanner plus performance boost, but we'll have to wait and see in a couple of months time.

Even a 1 will still be around £100 and they are definitely showing their age now, so I'd be inclined to suggest a new Android tab as an alternative - there are always mid-range ones for between £100 and £150 on offer.

as a laptop replacement you'll probably find you'd want a 10" screen at least.

You might then find that the best replacement for your old laptop is.... another laptop.

Tablets are find for browsing and watching video but if you need to do any work or a significant amount of typing then a proper laptop is much better.

Best to think about how you would use your new device, what programs you need to use and then your budget.

The Ipad 1 has a single Cortex A8 while the IPad 2 has a dual core Cortex A9 (same as the Ipad 3) which means not only does it have twice as many cores but each one is more powerful plus ram is doubled from 256MB to 512MB, the graphics card gets a reasonable upgrade as well and the Ipad 2 supported up to IOS 7 while the Ipad 1 is only supported up to IOS5.  I don't know what prices you're looking at but the Ipad 2 is certainly worth spending a bit more on that the Ipad 1 although as mentioned the Ipad 2 isn't going to be supported much longer (I don't know if it's announced whether it will support IOS 8) so I wouldn't spend much money on one.

If money is tight then a iPad 2 will do to surf the internet play games and watch video and do basic emails but iPad 3 and newer or better iPad 2 is supported by ios 8 here a link to Apple website.
