iTunes Library mp3's and DRM

Featured Replies

The majority of my music are Mp3s created from my own CDs, so I don't assume these are the issue.

Some other music are MP3's downloaded from iTunes.

Which is fine as long as I use an iPod/iPhone.

However, I've just jumped ship to a Nokia Lumia 930, which also includes the ability to hook into my iTunes library and put the music on the phone.

However, it reports that some music is DRM protected and therefore won't play - even some of the stuff I ripped from my own CD's.

Have I misunderstood that "buying" the music would actually let me play it on any device I wished?

Is there a relatively easy wy of stripping the enforced DRM so that I can continue to listen to the relaxing strains of Kenny G on a single unified device, outside of the Apple ecosystem?

Nokia has a free streaming service as well as Spotify that's available.

while that's lovely, I want to use my own music, in the order i want to listen to it, without using data.

The phones got a perfectly usuable media player, it's just getting it to use my music is challenge currently.

There is no easy process of stripping DRM off unfortunately.

If it's saying it about stuff you've ripped yourself it might be the format rather that DRM so worth checking they're definitely MP3 and not the Apple AAC.

If you bought the music through iTunes then it'll play on any Apple device that you own, but not any device. Apple do this to try and lock you in to their ecosystem and only buy Apple stuff...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

There is precedent for the music that is on Itunes with DRM to be stripped of it to allow its use on other devices under "fair use" ie so long as you are not making it available for public presentation - linky

There are a number of methods out there to remove the DRM if you are willing to search ( a number show up on the wiki page linked to above). Simplest method appears to be burning an audio CD and then ripping it onto the computer.

I happened to be in this situation yesterday which is why I am up to speed on it!

down load Winamp you can move your itunes library into it and you can move and re size your music to any device.

In iTunes, use 'Get Info' on the song you are looking at. It will give you the path including the file extension. If it is '.m4p', then it is protected by DRM. If it is '.m4a', then it is not protected. Both files are AAC format.

You can also add the 'kind' column to a list view and this will give you similar information.

If it is m4p then it is impossible to remove the DRM within Itunes. It won't allow you to convert the file type (except for burning it as audio to a CD)

No, because that would defeat the DRM and some artists won't allow distribution DRM free. It means you can't upgrade the song using iTunes Plus.
