Possible air lock? Or worse?

Featured Replies

So today I went out and checked my water and oil, I noticed my water being on minimum this made me think as usually it's always above the half way mark and has never moved,

I then opened the cap to top it up and the was a release of pressure and the water came up a tad.

The car was completely cold when I checked

Anyone know what it could be?

I have the same issue but even when my coolant level is full I have the dashboard warning light come on.The engine never overheats.Been told it's the waterpump read on here it could be early signs of head gasket.Done tests which confirm it's not a head gasket.Seems like a common problem which has multiple causes which vary yet they all have the same symptoms.Does anyone know of a Specialist around Birmingham that can diagnose the fault?

Any gurgling noises at all from the heater?

Hmm I've got the 150 head bolts and nipped them up abit, it's only lost a tiny bit of water so hoping the bolts do the job. If not I will get it pressure tested.

No gurgles either

I'd always expect a small hiss, it's when the level shoots up and starts pushing water out of the bottle that it starts to cause issues.

If it's the low coolant level warning your getting it will be the expansion bottle at fault.

I was out in the car last night so it had just sat for about 10 hours so was completely cold when I checked it this morning. Would it still hiss?

If there's a pressure differential either way, then it will do.  When hot, you will probably get the water wanting to shoot out of the top (mine does. There's no head gasket issue but the cooling system is running pressurised when hot)

Absolutely not, the system is being pressurised, it isn't doing it to itself.

If you have a pressurised system in the morning after parking the car then you have a head gasket failure or a cracked liner, there is NO other explanation. Period.

I've had white smoke on start up and sometime on boost for a while now, so it's starting to look more and more like the head gasket :(

Supercharv is correct I'm afraid, once the coolant system has cooled and been left overnight it shouldn't do much when you open the cap.

Even though it's running 2.1 bar boost?

After today's run to work before I went to leave I checked the water again and it seems to have more than what I had in Sunday. Also there was no white smoke on start up but there was still a bit of pressure in the system I released. I forgot to mention the car is running a 1756 at 2.1 bar so a fair amount over standard. ( I did nip the head bolts up a bit yesterday not that the moved much but the moved :))

Boost pressure won't matter much but some claim head lift even at slightly modified levels.

Tightening head bolts can make things worse if the gasket is damaged or cracked by squashing the damaged gasket apart.
