Is it possible/ advisable to remove the coil pack, for spark plug change, without the special VW tool, if so how do you?

You undo the wire going into it and just pull the pack upwards!

Use 2 broad flat screwdrivers, lever the coil up simultaneously on both sides, until its high enough to pull out by hand. They come out easy enough. Make sure you invest in a t bar plug spanner to remove the plugs

you can get a cheap version from Tool station but it is a little flimsy.
