would a new skoda/vw satnav heading fit a mk1 fabia? has it been done

Featured Replies

as the title says, has a new shape headunit been fitted to a mk1 fabia, is it possible if so does anyone have any pictures?  just I'm planning on upgrading my head unit next month and would like some ideas to budget around

Anything is possible.

Is it worth the hassle?, probly not!

Can't you just get a double din one with maps?

Can't you just get a double din one with maps?

i like having my phone connected with bluetooth to stream music from my phone

Pioneer F700/710/900/910 are the right size and pretty well suited to the car. Why reinvent the wheel (and not cheaply either)

Everything is updatable software wise - its only maps/firmware/bluetooth to be updated.

http://caraudiosecurity.com/nx302e-double-din-mechless-navigation maybe something a bit cheaper but they are out there

i don't really like the look of that, i have been tempted to fit on of my macs into my car, probably my mac mini, then fit a touch screen display and link it all up

Mac mini as a car puter?! That would be a massive waste. It would be much better with arduino/raspberry. Though, considering the worst case scenario I'd go with an Adroid HDMI stick.

Why not build a custom surround for a cheap tablet?

Maybe because a tablet (or a regular one) doesn't have an external GPS antenna option and when embed in the dashboard, satnav might be unsable.

It wouldn't be used to its full capability but I have 2 just sitting around doing nothing I fix Apple Macs and iPhones so I have Agee things going to waste :) need new things to do

Raspberry Pi?

Expensive route to go, the double DIN/surround and probably not worth the hassle when you can buy a new Garmen Nuvi for under a few hundred with free map upgrades fro life, job done, and it can easily be taken between cars. May not have some of the convenience factor or fashionability of an all in one system but doesn't have the problems either and a cheaper option.  For less cash than a double DIN unit, I'll be going the single DIN with bluetooth and a separate satnav.  Having used phone versions/built in versions and stand alone, I prefer the operational reliability and flexibility of a decent stand alone satnav anyway.

I can't understand how having to reach out to your windscreen is better than touch screen about as close as your gearstick

Plus the annoyance of wires including when driving, less pleasant driving environment and more distracting when driving to control,

more visible easy target to thieves etc, non integrated volume control, no turning down your music when giving directions, no control over phone calls when doing directions etc, suction could come unstuck while driving etc.

All in one does have some benefits I think you have glanced over!

2 completely different kettles of fish TBH. Yes standalone has its own benefits but just as many drawbacks too

Not even an expensive route to go, my F710 was sub £100

I have a tablet built in to my dash - was originally korbans so dont want to take the credit.

it has the tomtom app and works perfect :)

I haven't glanced over anything.  I don't have a problem with a single wire neatly tucked out of my way, nor with the fact I can have the satnav in front of me in field of view of the road ahead so I don't have to look down at where the radio is and take my eyes off the road. I just need to glance across quickly. Personally I think that's a far safer place for it but it's down to personal preferences.  What's a less "pleasant driving environment" ? Just because there's something on the windscreen and a wire to the power socket?  Doesn't make being in the car or driving it any less pleasant for me at all. As to making things easier for thieves, you can remove a stand alone (and the wndow bracket in seconds and take it with you so it's a non-argument I'd have thought.  I'd have guessed a would be thief would be more interested in a head unit with satnav built in.  Granted, your point on cost is valid but having used both systems, I consider that the stand alone (Garmins) are better tham most cheap head unit satnavs and safer to use for the reasons given.  I can see how some would prefer a neater solution but that doesn' make it a better one unless "better" is "neater".  Each to their own.  There's no right and wrong way, I was just trying to offer an alternative. It all boils down to personal preference.

I *think* there was a DD HU for the MkI as an expensive option with Sat  Nav.

As for a newer OEM one, I doubt it'd be possible to code everything in properly if at all.

As mentioned, get an aftermarket DD HU with sat nave/ BT etc. Pioneer do one that was on offer in Halfords the other week, looked the mutts nuts too IIRC

Where di you get your F710?

ebay

Can someone linky me to the F710, it throws up a gamepad for me?

As per here

http://www.conrad-electronic.co.uk/ce/en/product/379922/PIONEER-AVIC-F710-BT-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM

If you are searching for a unit on ebay, normally just look for Pioneer AVIC.......to be honest the D3, F700, and F900 are the most common on ebay....seem to be a bit rare on there right at the moment though.

The cheapest....the 310BT's should be cheap not many go above £150 but not many seem to be prepared to take the punt of 99p NR...cosmetically the least desirable due to the poor use of space/smaller screen although the removeable front could be a plus.....

I bet you tend to see people changing them mostly when they change cars....so probably at certain times of year...when they are either buying a better one for the car they bought (newer) OR find they can't take the radio across to the newer car they bought......so sit tight and wait !
