Replacement Engine

Featured Replies

My cars done 90k miles, a 1.9tdi, its serviced regular and isnt trashed. Yet the bottom end decided to fall out, The crank or something or other decided it didnt want to work anymore. Im now paying out £1300 for a recon engine as for the amount of work it would take aparently this is the better solution.

Has anyone got experience of this and is £1300 for a recon engine expensive? it does come with a warrenty.

Are you sure it was the crank or was it a conrod failing/coming loose? There is a known potential issue with the 1.9 pd tdi (specifically the BXE and BLS engine codes) whereby a conrod can come loose / fail and punch a hole in the engine block.

By coincidence it was discussed recently in another thread - see the links in this post:

Crank shaft failure?  never heard of such an issue and that is major.  please can you provide more details?  What has failed?  what are the symptoms and what could be a possible cause?

Seen 4 or 5 bxe engines throw a con rod through the engine block. Worst one i saw came straight through cylinder one of the engine block and also went through the ac compressor. I don't know if it's a coincidence but everyone of these engines were on company vehicles.

I was driving home afterwork yesturday and started to get a knock when i called AA he said it was possible tappets. I drove to a garage and by the time i got there it was unbelivably loud!! Stipped it down last night and its just f**ked!, not sure how it happened. I checked the oil last night to make sure i had some and it was showing as full.

edit: mines not a company vehicle or ever been one. May just of been unlucky.

I popped in to see my mechanic mate for a brew yesterday. He was in the process of rebuilding a 1.9 BXE engine due to a conrod fault.

From what he was telling me, this isn't unusual on the BXE engine and as a consequence replacement engines are going for good money.

Here's a few pics of what he showed me. What he was more amazed with was that the engine was still running, albeit like a bag of spanners, before he stripped it down!

This engine was from a VW Passat and from what I can remember had less than 50k miles on the clock.

Whats the diference between a BLS and a BXE engine?

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi Mole,

Where did you get your engine replacement? Would you recommend them? My BXE just had the same issue....

Were you on fixed or variable servicing?

I wonder if you could replace the bolts as a preventative measure?

Phil

Hi Phil, if that Q was to me, I had been on fixed service since I bought the car 4 years ago, until teh last oil change and I thought what the heck, lets stick it back on variable but that was only a couple of k miles ago.
