Minor Rant: Dealership Adverts

Featured Replies

Why it is commonplace for dealerships to put adverts in brand new (or any!) cars?

  • Branded tax disc holder (normal)
  • Window sticker in boot (normal)
  • Address on number plate (I think this is a legal requirement?)
  • "Valeted by" sticker in windscreen (!)
  • Additional "backplate" sticking out underneath numberplate with website address (!!!)

I can't think of any other retail scenario where this would happen.

Luckily all were easily removable :)

I know what you mean. I hate them [emoji19]

I asked the dealer to not put any advertising on my Rapid before I picked it up. He was happy to do it [emoji106]

Also they debadged the rear as well [emoji16]

I hate the babyseat/airbag warning on both sides of the sun visor. Yes I know it has to be there but looks ****.

At least you only have to wait till Wednesday till one of your list becomes a thing of the past. :)

I have to say I was surprised with my car how little there was on it of branding

- Tax disk holder just says the numbers for the 3 years roadside assistance that I've got with it so I consider that useful albeit the holder will be leaving the car shortly

- Rear window - I didn't have one of these at all which was nice not having to remove the gunk after taking them off.

- Thats due to number plate standardisations - The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 Act - and that the plate has to comply with BS AU 145d.

- The Valeted by thing is a new one on me.

- I've luckily not had these things on any cars I've owned but I've known lots of people that have had them forced upon them. A recent example was that they were not possible to remove because the holes would have meant drilling the bumper to fit the plates only or buying new plates to then drill and fit the holes in the bumper for the stupid frame.

I do agree the logos and branding is annoyingly excessive but I would like to point out that there are plenty of Nike tracksuits about with big white ticks etc ;)

I put personal plates on my Octy and the dealer met the cost of producing their own to ensure their details still appeared on them.

The window sticker I dealt with very swiftly shortly after collection and like WavyDavey says, the Tax Disc holder can go take a hike on Wednesday.

Some easy remidial action can remove these

Shameless advertising. My car has Skoda badges front, rear and on the wheels plus half a dozen VRS logos dotted about.

Yes, people will know it's a Škoda. And not even from the badges.

The OP is complaining about the retailer (garage/dealer) slapping their company name all over the car. Not everybody wants the world to know they bought their car from Western/Arnold Clark/etc...

Would you like it if you bought an iPad from Tesco and they applied tesco.com stickers on every surface?

It's already gone!  You don't have to display for 14 days (and the dealership hasn't provided it yet anyway)... by the time it comes it'll be too late.  When (if?!) it comes I'll have one of the last ever tax discs... I'll keep it safe, in the bin :D

Luckily, these were just plastic strips stuck to the back with (strong!) double-sided tape.

It looks like they've drilled holes in the front bumper to fit the plates though, when there already seems to be mounting holes for them.  Screws are in very top left & right corners of the plate.

Very happy with the new car!!

:)

You mean like with the bag they put it in when you walk out of the store? Almost everything you buy in-store and online leaves with self-promotion. You can take an iPad out of the Tesco bag and you can remove stickers from car windows (as I removed mine). The number plate thing can be a pain, but if it really is an irritation just ask the dealer for a plain plate before collection. Tax-disc stickers should not be a problem for much longer.

You won't get a normal tax disc anyway. Our vRS tax ran out on 31st August and the DVLA sent out a "Temporary" tax disc that was just printed on a sheet of A4 paper by what looked like a a mid 90's inkjet printer. We had to cut it out ourselves and it's just single sided.

The accompanying letter explained that they had ordered vastly reduced numbers of normal tax disc for the last few months so as to save tax payers money with a view to when the normal discs ran out these temporary ones were sent out to people with a view to them only having to last a few weeks.

There is no problem with removing plate surrounds from any car..... I'm not sure what you are trying to get at but if the plates were drilled so as the screws passed through the plates and surrounds before going into the bumper then the screws would still do the same without the surrounds there.... If you mean the plates were fitted into the surrounds without screws but the surrounds were then screwed onto the bumper then why would the plates need to be drilled if you removed the surrounds? A set of double sided numberplate fixing pads fitted to the back of the plate would mean there was no reason to drill the plates etc....

When i had my Fabia vRS it came with the plates stuck to the car front and rear. I put plate surrounds on my self while i had the car which were ftted with screws in the holes that are there anyway and the plates fitted in the holders without screws etc... Then when i traded the car in i removed the surrounds and stuck the plates back onto the car.

There will be alot less once displaying tax discs isn't compulsory

Sent from my Galaxy S5

I asked for "GB" plates because I travel abroad. The dealer was happy to fit them but said they didn't have any GB plates left with their logo on the bottom. I don't have a problem with this, but there are quite a few people out there that think the lack of the original dealer logo on the plate must mean the car has had a prang. Apart from the tax disc holder, there were no other stickers fitted.

  • Address on number plate (I think this is a legal requirement?)

There is no need for a dealer to put advertising on the Number plate.

The only Legal requirement on the Number plate is :-  The post code of the Company that made the plates, this is so the Authorities can trace the Maker if the plated are made with Mis-spaced didgits or an Incorrect font and the plate has to be the correct size ( there is a minimum/Maximum/shape size I think )

The other is the Kite Mark.  BS AU 145d.

Plates are Illegal if Post code, Kite Mark is not displayed and the plates are not the correct size
