Regarding the VAG cable . I have Windows 7 on the laptop and the instructions state you need to download the usb drivers from the internet.

It should be plug and play i.e if I put the usb lead into the slot on the side of the laptop then it should be automatic?

I see there is a red Led on the top of the 16 pin diagnostic socket.

Instinct tells me this should light up when I plug it into the laptop?  Well it DEOS NOT!!!

Have plugged other devices into the laptop usb port in  the laptop and they work.

Could anybody with vcds in West Yorkshire possibly give Pappafox a little of their time and do a full system scan and post the results on the forum, I feel like crossing the Penines my self.

  • No starting problem what so ever.    One thing I haven't mentioned before. I rarely drive it - it's the wife's car. But a couple of months ago on two or three occasions when I pulled up at a junctio

  • I dont think the wear will be considerable we really arent taking about neglect on any great scale . My Fabia does short trips and low miles and the oil is still clear every year going to service

No, that Led will only come on if you plug it into your car. I have an ebay cable (not Gendan) and that's the way it works.

Thanks to freelander and thinkpad...It works.

Wow cool software and diagnostics!!!!

Excellent good to hear shame about the head rebuild

If you aren't fed up of advice yet go for a good thrash with some decent non supermarket fuel and a system cleaner , keep the revs up and don't be afraid to thrash it , it will do wonders

Cheers RichF.   Gonna rev the spherical objects off it tomorrow on the motorway !!!!!!

Will keep the maintenance routine up!!!

Glad to see you finally sorted it. Well done!

Personally I believe your head refurb was not necessary and a waste of money, hopefully the head was done to high standard and put back correctly....we all learn from mistakes...

If the car runs ok, send the cable back for a refund, you wont need it for the foreseeable future..

As for the old maintenance regime.....I dont think it was to blame for this fault, it was probably only one injector (no. 2) that was faulty, as its unusual for 2 to go at once unless theres been a fuel filtration issue. But if you want to keep the car for a long time, its worth the few minutes necessary to do an oil /filter change, its dead easy to do it yourself  on your particular engine.

How much did the dealer charge for the diagnostic scan?

Did you change the fuel filter?

Did you see anything inspecting the old injectors?

It looks as if you bought 3 injectors, am I right? Why?

xman thanks.

There was a loss of compression in 2 and 3 cylinder before the head work was done. Would a fault inject account for that?

Points take on maintenance.

1. Diagnostics £ 75 - ouch - acerbic comment on wasting my brass please!

2. Not changed fuel filter -- will do. Oil and filter were changed with head work but perhaps another one is in order

3.Have a contact with a digital microscope x 400 magnification so going to see if he can look at them next week. Might get them cleaned then.

4. I agree that most likely cause 1 injector no 2 but as I want to keep the thing now I've "wasted" so much dosh, why not start afresh with 3.

It means i potentially have 2 good  OE injectors spare and at some point in the future someone may need them.

They are in sealed labelled plastic bags.

Going to keep the cable as I will run diagnostics from time to time to look after this beast!!

I agree with Xman , the soot deposits due to the faulty injector could reduce the compression

Goes to show how important diagnostics using the correct tools is, these cars are complex but very clever and a readout coupled with some of the expertise can often help pinpoint the cause
