Got My Amp + Speaker/hu Query?

Featured Replies

Hullo

AMP came this morning and I've unpacked it so I can study the insructions & fittings during the day & evening tonight. It certainly looks nice & feels good & heavy, which is reassuring.

Now, the HU - The box which I stumbled across for my Kenwood CD HU said the maximum output was 45 watts (x4).

If some **** hadn't outbid me on a set of 170W Kenwoods at the VERY LAST MINUTE , last night, would it have been pointless trying to match 170W speakers to a 45W output HU - or am I talking total crap? I'm still getting over the fact I was outbid, but at least the person had to pay

the h/u will drive most coaxial / component speakers unless you go to high end 150+ units...

As Paul says, as long as the power rating of the speakers is LARGER that the output from your HU, you should be OK. Would be "interesting" the other way round! :D

What are the ratings for the standard speakers?

That's what I was wondering - if the standards are around 60W or 70W, I don't see much point in upgrading to 90W speakers - I can't imagine there'd be a great deal of difference, apart from perhaps a pair of Kenwoods would be of a better quality...

BTW -Thanks Paul for the confirmation of my talking crap - I do love the Northern bluntness...

Quality of the speaker isn't just determined by power rating. You also have to look at the quality of the materials used, distortion figures etc.

A good pair of 70W speakers would be better than a cheap set of 100W speakers.

Hope this helps!

Is this where the "OHMS" thing comes in...? It said the 90W Kenwoods were 4 ohms, which I think is the same as the sub I just got off Des - I reckon 4 ohms is good, anyway.

Ohms is the measure of resistance of the speaker. You need to check that the output from your head unit is the same as the speakers. I believe (and someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that many modern car speakers are 4 ohms. Used to be 8 or more.

You might want to look at figures such as THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) when comparing speakers (if the figure is available). This is expressed as a percentage - lower is better.

Cheers,

I imagine the THD on my speakers is pretty rubbish, because they will distort at a point (that being when it gets too loud to be comfortable) plus I noticed this morning my l/h door speaker has started buzzing on low bass again - I have a feeling the speaker may be on its way out again. :(

I think I'll look at these 90W Kenwoods later on, on ebay, but I'm not convinced about the quality yet. I mean, they're only

They "sound" cheap and nasty mate.....

Which is why I was so hacked off when the 170W were ripped from my grasp at the last minute... Must keep looking... Anyone know a really good brand / model that would fit straight into a Fabia door? i.e would have to be 13cm, I think.

I'm sure that's been mentioned before somewhere, J. I know for sure there was talk about a mounting plate for the Fabia, so it may have included details about speakers that could potentially fit...

I'd try searching for you, but am seriously tired today - typing stupid replies to posts is all I can manage...

:D [yawn]

Jason, don't forget I still have all the powercable stuff lying about. We're talking beer money on that ;)

:D

That alright, Q - I got some misc cables attached to the amp, and tonight is going to be spent scouring the instruction pamphlet for any help at all as to what they are... If I find I need power cables I'll give you a shout

(I have a feeling I have everything I need though. There were at least four or five different cables attached to the amp - I could tell two (labelled L & R) went to the sub and there were others)

You can just see the headlines now:

"Local Man Melts Car" :D

melting could be an under-statement.

"Local Man gets third degree burns as car's wiring system explodes"

or

"Jason Does It Again"

Thankfully the paperazzi never cottoned on to "that" little faux pas! :D

It's never too late!

Hmmm.... serious thread driftage going on today for some reason....

Any ideas for other speakers that might fit?

  • Author

lethargy does that to people... [yawn]

Yes, back to Fabia door speakers... Any other decent makes? My local radio specialist mentioned Pioneer as a good make.

My Pioneer's are rated @

160 W Front

120 W Rear

Should be more than enough for "normal" use ;)

I think the size is more of an issue for me, not the power. They HAVE to be a (relatively) easy fit without any major works on the door. How do you cram 16cm speakers into a gap designed for 13cm?
