Got My Amp + Speaker/hu Query?

Featured Replies

Possibly, guess that would depend on how the sub was constructed...

I dunno - I just assumed something that size needs powering somehow...? I'll have to have a good look at it later on.

Anyway - I've purchased 5m of f***-off thick cable, rated to 170amps, which should be good enough to run power safely from the battery, also got 2m of 70A thinner cable, because I "thought" I needed power for the sub... Des? You reading this? Am I right?

:D

That's what the amp's for... :)

Don't worry Rob - the AMP was one thing that didn't come with any instructions. I'll have a good look at it tonight... (you're saying the L&R speaker cables power the sub too?) So, I've probably just ashed out money for 2m of 70A cable for nothing then... [damn!]

Well, if you were setting up a home hifi, wouldn't you just run speaker cable to the speakers? It's just like that, although if Des has slipped you an active crossover in the sub enclosure you might well need power to it...

I've PM'd him to ask quickly... I know what you mean about the home hi-fi, I just assumed that the sub was much beefier / juice hungry than a regular home stereo speaker... ?

PS: I'm catching up on that 4th posting rank... :D (PS: I'm not trying, it's just kind of happening)

Depends on your home speakers really I guess... :D

I'll recover my post count when I'm back at work next week! :p

Jason...

Subs on their own are powered by the amp - the only connection to the sub will be the meaty-ish speaker cable coming from the amp. Don't try and connect the 12v lead to the sub - you'll get one almighty thump and that will be it :D

BTW - why 2m of cable? That won't be long enough to run from the battery to the boot... or are you mounting it under a seat? (Amps get hot!)

No no no - 5 metres of 170A for power to the battery to the AMP, and the 2m WAS going to be from the splitter to the amp/sub - redundant now, I guess. :D

I tell yer what! this 170A cable is about 20mm thick - well chunky and should be sufficient. :D

Hmmm, probably slight overkill, but better to be safe than sorry!

Does the splitter box have fuses? If so, you want to use it - plus it'll leave you the option of powering something else in the boot at a future date if you so wished...

  • Author

The only fuse is a huge 40A fuse which sits about 12" from the battery on the massive power cable - It's already wired up with the ring term for the battery + terminal. The rest should be a doddle, just the cable routing that concerns me a wee bit - Time to break out the hammer drill! :D

Run the cable out of the front grill, and blu-tac it along the bonnet, up the windscreen and over the roof - sorted :)

I'm glad I don't take all Briskoda advice seriously. :D

No, No, No. Surely the best route is to drop it down thru the engine bay and cable tie it to the exhaust. Drill a hole in the boot floor and feed it through. 10 minute job - max! :D :D

Jason's got plenty of experience of dropping things in the engine bay, after all! :D (joke!!)

OOOOiii!! Monsieur Howard! I resemble that remark! :D

Seriously, Jason, you're going to have your work cut out trying to find a route for a 20mm cable!

Well - I should have no trouble routing under passenger side panels... I think. The fun will be when it comes to getting through to the engine. I'm hoping for a hole through the bulkhead, else it will be time for the hammer drill and a massive drill bit! :(

(time to look up that thread again)

Passenger side - somewhere - is a grommet wotsit you can stick a hole through. Just remember to use something to seal it afterwards...

Also, if you have the right tool (missus) remove the glove box as it gives you more room to see what you're doing...

  • Author

REMOVE the glove box? This sounds like its going to be a demolition job. :D

Undo the screws underneath it, pull it out slightly, disconnect the power lead for the glovebox light and it should just come away. Watched mechanic at my dealer's do it in about 2 minutes. Dead easy.

Just don't leave it in the engine bay and forget about it...

[shakes head] - why oh why oh why did I post about that headlight incident.? It's going to haunt me for the rest of my briskoda life!

You've reassured me about the glove box - I will "HAVE IT!" tonight I reckon.
