.....winter tyres to the front wheels only (225/40/18).  My winters don't fit my car anymore ( brakes to big ) and can't really afford a new set of 17"/18" winter wheels and tyres

Need to shift my 16" Alloys/Winter tyres first.

 

Yep 17" will fit. 16" wheels won't fit the front due to the brake disc size

No idea if this is sensible or not but could you keep 2 of your old winters and put them on the back?

I couldn't afford to get more wheels so ended up buying 18" tyres and changing them over. Was 3deg c this morning so thinking of changing to winters in the next week or so.
