Wipers stop in traffic

Featured Replies

I have a 2005 Octavia which I have owned for about 6 months. Just recently the wipers have started behaving oddly. They work fine whilst driving but stop when the car stops moving. I find this incredibly irritating - sitting at the traffic lights unable to see out until I move off. I'm told this is a "feature" but why has it only just begun? If it is intentional is there any way I can disable it?

Many thanks.

It is a feature and I don't know of a way to disable it.

I'd need to check, but if it's set to intermittent doesn't it stop completely but if it's set to continuous doesn't it revert to intermittent when you're stationary?

Thats the way I see it working too, I like it,

Simply clever

Try turning off the wipers off when your stood and put them back on a again and they should start wiping continuously or intermittently ( if in that position )

Yes you're right.

After years of owning French and Italian cars the first time my Octy did this I just assumed it was an electrical fault. I was really pleasantly surprised a few months later when I found out it was actually supposed to do it.

I like the feature too. The wipers simply default to the speed below the one set to.

Therefore when stationary if you move the stalk to the fastest speed they should wipe constantly at normal speed.

My Audi is the same, stop when the wiper are switched on and they wipe intermittently. Pull away and the wipers start normally again.

Even better the rear wipe when you engage reverse gear.

Just checked mine and on intermittent it stays as intermittent when you stop!

Will check the others later.

Another feature is that the rear wiper activates every 30 seconds or so when your fronts are set to continuous and the car is being driven.

Mine don't. Unless I have the rear wiper switched on.

Nor mine!

That's helpful, thank you for all the replies. I shall have a play with intermittent wipe and hopefully get used to it.

It was something I'd tolerated until this week when I we had very bad floods - the journey to work (or rather half way to work and then home again) involved negotiating almost impassable roads, often at walking pace. The spray from other cars meant I couldn't see anything unless I kept moving!

think the feature is dependent  on the frequency of the intermittent wipe, eg less time delay, wipers will continue when you stop.

Mine's a 2012 Blackline estate. Don't know if there is a minimum speed limit or something, but If travelling at 70 on the motorway with the front wipers on continuous the rear definitely wipes intermittently every 30 secs or so. (Longer time gap than normal rear wipe), Doesn't seem to do it if you travel through town at low speed. Far too complicated, if you ask me, I prefer the piece of string tied to my Spitfire's wipers, :D
