Goodyear EfficientGrip / Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if these two tyres are produced alongside each other or has the Performance version replaced the other?

I had a pair of the EfficientGrips on the rear when i got the car and they only look to be 12-18 months old at most. Yesterday had a coming together with a curb which has put a gash in the wall of one of them so i am looking at getting another so as to be a straight swap and still be a matching pair etc.... Having looked online i can only find two places that do them (Camskill & Tyre Leader) Everyone else only does the Performance version.

So just wondered if both are still produced or if the Performance replaced the other version?

I don't know, but suspect that the 'performance' version has replaced the previous version.

No idea what size you are looking at, but KwikFit have them in my size and at a fairly decent price without having to get the delivered to you and then arrange fitting elsewhere at additional cost.

I'd buy the newer version based upon the performance of the previous generation.

I saw gains of 3-4 mpg over several thousand miles of varied driving as these 'bedded in'. Quieter than my previous tyres and seem to be wearing very well.

Performance certainly suits me. I don't go hooning around and find them pretty decent, wet or dry, if I do.

The elegance is 225/40 R18 92W....

I believe the "performance" version replaced the originals and were an improvement in all areas from what ive read. Got them on my octy, made 3-4mpg difference as KBPhoto said.

So unless i can find a place that can still get the originals from their warehouse it looks like a case of replacing both rears and maybe selling the other good tyre..... :(

Well i spoke to my local tyre place today and after a long search he called back and thinks he's managed to find me an EfficientGrip. He's hoping to get it in for tomorrow and is happy that if i get there and it's the Performance version i'll leave it and he'll send it back etc....

Fingers crossed!!!!!!!

Good luck. Hope he's got the one you wanted.

I use Eagle F1 Assymmetic 2 on my Octavia, 225/45/17 and they are great, I use Efficient Grip Performance on my Alfa and they suit the sportier driving I would say. Well worth trying.

Well called round to see the tyre guy and it was an EfficientGrip Performance that he'd got in. So looks like a case of a couple of new tyres for the back instead of one and then asking for the good one back and trying to get something for it either on here or on ebay.

Does anyone have a link to any tests comparing the new version to competitor tyres? The old one was pretty good so interested to see what they’ve done to keep the new version up there with the best.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 have just been tested by TUV SUD compared to its rivals in 205/55R16V as used on Golf Mk7 and 2013 onwards Octavia Mk3.

In wet braking measured from 80-20kph (50-12mph) the Goodyear braked 3.5% shorter than the second best tyre the Continental PremiumContact 6.

Those that like a tyre that lasts will be impressed by their findings also.

Goodyear should last 64,000km or 39,969 miles.

Continental should last 44,788km or 27,831 miles.

Michelin Primacy 4 should last 53,317km or 33,131 miles (indeed my wife's Karoq has done 24,000 miles so far on it's Primacy 215/50R18 tyres and looks good for around 32,000 miles before replacing).

Bridgestone Turanza T005 should last 43,050km or 26,751 miles.

Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue should last 39,628km or 24,624 miles.

The new Goodyear is available initially in 19 sizes between 16-18 inches but 26 more sizes will be added during 2020.

Is the rolling resistance equal to the original one?

The article I read stated the following "the results have been achieved courtesy of a high tread elasticity to improve tyre wear on rough roads, and more gripping edges to accelerate water evacuation and cut braking distances. Large centre ribs boost stability too". If I can get them in the right size they will probably replace the excellent Michelins on her Karoq due to the cost saving overall.:)

Lets hope they work better when worn than the original version! As soon as you got past the 'testing' surface they were terrible if you tried to push on at any pace.

SWMBO is no Michele Mouton so  probably wouldn't know it had new Goodyear tyres rather than worn Michelins.

I fail to understand why tyre tests almost never go to the trouble of testing tyres’ performance when say, half worn.

Great to know how they perform new, better to understand what the degradation in performance is over their lifetime as that is seriously important. Michelin are the only manufacturer I’ve noticed that pays any attention to this.

Also found Hankook do quite a good job of it, their ventus prime tyres last a lonjg time. Kuhmo have a very predictable/linear grip loss with wear. But goodyear/dunlop eco tyres always have this massive drop after the first say, 0.5mm.
The tyre tests I usually find are about as helpful as the old MPG testing they used to do on cars in the 2010's.......as useful as a paper shoes in bad weather..
