Inspection & Oil change distances differ - what should I do

Featured Replies

This weekend Maxdot has started to tell me on ignition on that an inspection is due in 700 miles - however it says oil change due in 1800 miles. Should I get it booked in at 700 miles for inspection and get oil done at same time.

Car is on the Skoda free 3 yrs servicing plan which sets service intervals at 10k and I will be there in 1800 miles.

Confused

Something isn't right here.

The display will give you the time (in days) and distance (in miles) to the next service.

If you are on a fixed service interval (12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever is reached first) then you need to wait 1,800 miles before booking the car in.

Are you sure it says 700 miles? Any chance of a picture?

Also, it doesn't matter which service the car is booked in for (inspection/minor or variable/long life) the oil and oil filter are always changed.

I'll check tonight and post pic, dont know if related but on Friday did 160 mile trip up A1 - at destination Columbus showed 0 miles with travel time remaining of 54 mins ??

Very confused

The Columbus issue sounds to me as though it could be related...

Heres a picture of my Maxdot display - am I reading it wrong ?

I've never ever seen that before.

Skoda UK often refer to their minor or basic service as an 'inspection service' which includes an oil and filter change, however it looks to me as though your car is asking for a visual inspection of some kind before the fixed / annual oil change.

Is your Superb a UK model, it isn't imported is it?

Would you mind if I reproduced your picture in the Octavia forum, hopefully one of the guys in there might know more...

Car is fully UK spec and sourced from UK dealer so I would hope all totally UK spec.

Thats fine to move pic to Octavia forum,

Thanks for your help - pleased its not me reading screen wrong

Been into dealer today (not supplying dealer who carried out first service), would seem that I should be on fixed 10k service interval.

When on fixed service interval both inspection and oil change should run together so I should have both inspection and oil change at 1800 miles. When on variable they run independantly.

So it would seem yet another part of my cars PDI that wasn't completed correctly  neither did they then set computer correctly when it was last serviced at 10K

I have variable serving and the separate messages does not come up like your picture.

Did they say what an 'inspection' is?

As far as I am aware numerous checks or in other words an 'inspection' is carried out during an oil change service.

I have a 2014 model and I'm on fixed and get the split message of inspection/oil change on mine. Mileage is the same for both though. First time I've seen it as my last Superb just had the one mileage reminder.

Did they say what an 'inspection' is?

Afraid not - during our discussion the majority of the time was spent on telling me how sensors in the sump determine the oils condition and from there work out the oil change interval. I did push the point as to whether I should book it in for the "inspection" at now 500 miles but was told no and just go with the 1800.

So still confused (and keeping fingers crossed nothing fails in the next 1800 ish miles !)

Seems like a backward step then, all Skoda have done is confuse us all :D

I suspect that this is a non-UK thing where by some countries implement an interim service requiremnt that does not include an oil change.

Why not ignore what the display tells you and do what your brain tells you instead?

Fixed service every 12 months/10,000 miles whichever comes first, and always get the oil changed

Because not everyone's brain automatically knows that their car should be serviced every 10K / 12 months.

This is why the car has the ability to show the intervals, so we don't need to remember.

It isn't difficult, Skoda have managed it for years very successfully, for some reason they've now made it unnecessarily complicated.

  • 6 months later...

Shouldn't there be only one message with variable?

That's how it used to be, see post #4.

For some reason it has changed, and is now increasingly confusing!

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got 3 free services with the finance deal but they insist it has to be 10 k and won't change it to 20 k. So I've already had my first service and now it's due another and I've only had it 6 months

Yup, deal is fixed only - so 3x 10k

I got a similar service deal as Skoda had a promotion at the time I bought mine. I tried to get them to allow variable but it was fixed. I just got them to change to variable after my last (third) service
