I Think My DSG Is Broken!

Featured Replies

So me and the family went out today and on the way home my car started making some horrible noise. It's coming from, what sounds like the NS and only happens when in gear - I coasted in N when coming to a stop and the noise stopped. So I think it's the DSG box.

The sound is hard to describe, sort of a grinding, tapping sound.

Its on the drive and is booked in my local indie on Mon and I'm preparing for the worst!

Has anyone experienced the same or similar? Also, what sort of price am I looking at if it is the DSG?

I've only had the thing two months and it's got 45k miles so I'm peed to say the least.

Also I've scanned it and thee isn't any fault codes.

Cheers,

John

Speak to the garage you got it from before your Indy does anything. unless you got it privately?

Yeah it was a garage. I won't pay for it being checked so i figured I'd get an honest appraisal before I go back to the garage.

How old is it?

Unless it's 5+ years old then with only 45,000 miles on it I'd be asking Audi for a goodwill contribution.

It’s just gone 5 years, it was 5 years old the week I bought it actually. However it wasn’t serviced fully by Audi – it was done by an indie by the previous owner, plus it isn’t in standard form (maybe this has contributed?). I’m not sure these would factor in but I’m sure it’s enough for them to not subsidise the repair bill.

I was looking through my paperwork and it had the Haldex and DSG oil changed at 38k miles. Maybe the oil was changed because the previous owner noticed problems and this was a quick-fix, however with 7k miles since I doubt it. Or the oil wasn’t genuine stuff and has degraded – causing my ballache. Or am I reading too much into it and it was changed at the correct interval, with the correct oil and the problems have occurred since.

The box oil change is 40k miles anyway I think, so 38k isn't out of the ordinary

If the mechatronic unit that controls the dsg has gone its 2500 minus a couple of quid. The part itself is 1800 pounds. Although oil runs through it it is not a servicable part it can go at any mileage. Mine went at 32k and 5+ years. It's the brains part that fails. How it was with me vw customer services will not replace initially. Your Audi garage will diagnose it then they will support you with a contribution and Audi and you the rest. I think Audi are less resistant than vw as I really had to fight my corner for mine as initially said no . It still cost me a 1000 pounds as my contribution. The replacement mech unit is a completely revised one so will not fail. You can pm me if you wish for all the ins and outs. Good luck Alan .

Yeah, I've since checked the service manual and it is 40k miles.

A small update... I didn't bother with the indie, I figured that regardless of the fault I didn't think I should have to pay of the repair. So I rang the trader on Mon who agreed to inspect it today. However on the way down things got worse, a lot worse. Whilst driving down the car dropped down a gear, or maybe two, so the engine speed increased a lot, it would not change from this gear in either D Or M and the display on the maxidot disappeared, where it would usually tell you what gear you're in. I pulled over immediately, where I noticed the CEL light was illuminated and whilst reversing into the side of the road the car jumped out of R. A major concern and some certainty as to the problem being the box was now my thought.

I rang the trader and explained my now worsened position and waited for the AA. They scanned the car and diagnosed two faults; gear 5 ratio being incorrect and something to do with not disengaging the selected gear. They then ordered a low loader and off it went to be dropped off at the garage. The trader said they're diagnosing it, again and getting back to me. I haven't heard today so if they don't ring by lunch tomorrow I'll be ringing back.

Although they've agreed to inspect the car, they haven't agreed to repair the fault so I'm not counting my chickens yet.

You are covered under the sale of goods act. They must supply you with a vehicle that is fit for purpose. Do not dip your hand in your wallet just because they say no..they would not be a garage if they didn't try some kind of tactic to get money out of you.

Yeah I'm certainly not expecting them to do it without some sort of altercation first. I want to give them a chance to put it right, which is what's happening now. I already know what my next steps are either way. I've spent most of the weekend reading and a lot of yesterday on the phone getting advice.

Hope you get it sorted. Does indeed sound like the mechatronics is toast

You're right in thinking that they won't just agree to repair it straight away.

You may have to open up a case with Audi to get them to agree to it.

Is the car modified?

I didn't buy it from Audi, it's from an independent trader. They also haven't agreed to repair it, they want a contribution from me. I'm waiting for a call back though - I explained I'm not prepared to contribute. It has been diagnosed however as both the mech and the box as being faulty! To answer your last question, yes. However it was advertised and bought as is.

Woh , your`e or someone is, looking at 6 grand!

The modified bit might put a spanner in the works.

They might argue that more power = more strain on the transmission which has led to an early failure.

They would need to prove this though.

I'd say you still have a strong case.

I had an update today, it's currently at a gearbox specialist being rebuilt. The trader agreed to accept it to be repaired.

I rang Audi and its 4.7k for the box and mech replacement with the exchange.

The power part did cross my mind and I'm not sure if upgraded parts are available for the innards. If so if hope the specialist realised this and builds it with this in mind. Either way it's being sorted. It's an excuse to get it Shark'd too. I'm not sure of the current map.

£4.7k!

Yikes. I'll be getting the extended warranty on ours then.

Good news that youve not had to fight to get it sorted.

Hope you get your car back soon :)

I would. To be honest i expected it to be more. The oil and filter change on the DSG is £250, as bluer36 says the mech unit is £1800 and then the box cost, any gubbins and they said a full days labour.

Hope you get your car back soon :)

That's my next issue, I have no control over this and it's already been off the road a week now.

The only upgrade I'm aware of are uprated clutch plates.

They're not cheap though:

This kit is over £1.5k just for the clutch plates!!! It allows the box to handle 750nm of torque!

And then what do you need when the box is handling so much torque... more cooling of course.

Uprated oil cooler for another £1.3k!

Glad your getting it sorted John. VW dealers charge 175 for the 40k Dsg oil change .

Update!!!

I received an email from the garage yesterday evening saying the car was done and ready to be collected so I went first thing this morning.

It feels like a different car; the gearbox was always a bit clunky on downshift and a bit noisy at low speed. All of this is gone and I assume this must have been a contributing factor to the failing. I googled DSG noise a while ago and it seemed “normal” and was as described by a lot of people on various forums so didn’t think much of it, also my last car was an auto and was always clucky on downshift too.

Anyway, the problem turned out to be a bearing that broke down completely so the box has a set of new bearings, clutch kit and the whole lot overhauled with new filter and oil.

The mech unit turned out to be fine so this wasn’t touched, which saves me a trip and expense to get it mapped.

All in all it wasn't as painful as I thought it would be and I have a lot of respect for the trader who said today they "just took it on the chin", even if it has taken three weeks but I imagine the work involved is extensive.
