Common Air Con Faults

Featured Replies

Sooo the air con Doesnt Work on my Fabia Vrs.

Just wondering if there are any common faults.

Because the first car i went to see when was looking at buying one, The air Con Didnt Work.

A Friend of mine has the same car with the same Problem

And Now i have finally bought one, the Air con Doesnt work On This.

I Must admit I Cant Hear the Clutch Kick In On Compressor, But that Doesnt Automatically make in the compressor that is the problem.

Help Will Be Much Appreciated

Thanks

Jack

Compressor pulley has a rubber coupling that's designed to sacrificially shear if the compressor can't turn, so check that the compressor shaft is turning as well as the pulley.

Lack of refrigerant will obviously cause problems. When ours was very low, there was a hissing noise deep inside the dash when the AC was switched on. This went away with a re-gas. AC man claimed that it was normal for 10% of refrigerant to leak out each year, dunno how true that is, but the quantity remaining in ours when it was done was roughly consistent with this.

Evaporator temperature sensor can fail. There's a How-to thread somewhere for changing this out.  Check the other two things first though or you'll be wasting your time on this one (ask me how I know...).

2 out of 3 Fabias we've had in the family had faulty evap sensors.

The post above covers it really.  If you have access to scan the car for fault codes, you may get a pressure sensor fault code flag up which in turn could simply mean the gas level is too low.  See if anyones doing a half price re-gas at this time of the year and give that a shot?  F1 auto centres won't charge if they can't lower your AC temp (they'll remove the gas afterwards mind)

I have an issue with my air con too, the light doesn't actually turn on when the AC button is pressed, and neither does the air recirculation one (however you can hear the tone change/speed up when it is pressed).

The dash lights have been changed so could be a fault with whoever did the conversion for as to why they aren't lighting up, but what checks could I do to see if the air con is actually kicking in?

Broken wire in front of the gearbox on a little plug.

I Work at a Garage And We Have An Air Con Regas Machine. Havnt checked that as i cant hear the Clutch On Compressor to start with.

It's. Constant spinning ac compressor on them. Well mine is anyway. I had the same fault. Traced wire broken at the plug in front of gearbox. Removed plug and joined wires. Now it's all good again

Mine worked when it was regassed but then i could hear it hissing so assume its leaking but i cant find the leak!

It's. Constant spinning ac compressor on them.

To the OP:- this is true, so as said a lot earlier, "no clutch" - though if a garage has a gas recovery unit and someone qualified to legally use it, I'd hope that they had a knowledge or access to a database to let them know how each system works - like "clutch" controlled compressor or not, liquid line orifice or valve to control delivery of liquid and which refrigerant is used and its weight and running pressures etc.
