Wheel/tyre size

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise please at the moment my mk2 octavia has 15" steel wheels on it with 195x55x15 tyres I am thinking of putting some 16" alloys on.if I was to change the wheel size would I have to change tyre size as most of the wheels that I have looked at come with 205x55x16 so could anyone tell me what size tyre I would have to have on a 16" alloy ? The reason I ask is that my car has the 6 speed dsg box and I don't know if the change in tyre size would affect the gearing in anyway ? Many thanks kev.

To keep the tyre width the same and to keep the gearing within 1% you could fit 195/50-16 tyres; a common size (fitted to my wife's Clio).

Depending on the wheel width you could increase the tyre width and go for 205/45-16, still within 1% for the gearing..

205/55-16 tyres will change the overall gearing by almost 6%.  You are right that these are a common size, usually on 6 - 7" wide rims.

Are you sure you are running on 195/55/R15 Tyres as the smallest recommended for a Mk2 Octavia is 195/65/R15 which would put 205/55/R16 well within the 1% at - 0.35%

Mk2 with 16" will be 205/55r16.

There should be a list of alternative sizes inside the fuel flap.

I really doubt you have 195/55r15. I'd bet they are 65 series.

Personally, I'd check my speedo with a GPS as AU delivered MK2s with 205/55r16 under-read by 9% (eg: 110kph on the speedo is 101kph actual). I'd think about going 215/55r16 if UK delivered vehicles are the same.

The approved tyre sizes are in the fuel flap (in this case 205/55R16). If you currently have 195/55R15 ones, they're the wrong size for the car.

It will if it's 5x112 PCD, an ET around 45-52, centrebore of 57.1 and 6.5"-7.5" wide. ET, width & possibly PCD should be stamped / cast on the back of the wheel (usually on the spokes). Centrebore will have to be measured but you can do that with a tape measure.

205/55r16 91W are tyre specifications, not wheel specifications.

I have a set of 16" alloys off a 2003ish Audi A4. About 5mm difference in offset but no problems.

Would 205/45/16 be ok ?

Cheers kev.

No, too small, they're for Mk 2 Fabias. 205/55R16.

What about alloys with 205/55/16 off a 2005 Audi tt stud pattern 5x100 thay any good cheers kev.

They need to be 5x112 with a 57.1 bore as has been stated above.

And would this information be stamped on the wheel ? As some of the people who are selling these wheels don't know that information and are just saying I would have to find out which isn't very helpfully to me but there you go hence all the questions cheers kev.

It should be stamped on the back of the spokes or centre.

to tack a question on the end here, I have a scout with 225/50/17's on it... what is the best size for my 16 inch steel spare wheels?  Is there a size calculator somewhere?

Many thanks!

The Scout runs a bigger diameter wheel/tyre combination to give increased ground clearance.

Google "will they fit"

The Scout is a bit of an odd one. It uses tyres one size up from what it should (which is where the extra ground clearance over the Octy 4x4 comes from) and there are no official alternatives for different sized wheels. The best matching size on a 16 would be 205/60R16, but its not officially approved.

Only approved size for 16" on a scout is 205/55/16 which is what I use without any issues

Almost 4% difference in circumference and so about 4% difference on the speedo apparently.

205/55r16 is about 25mm less in diameter than 225/50r17.  It will drop the car by about 12mm.  18mm if you take into account the difference between a new 17 & a worn 16.  Given the Scout is AWD, I wouldn't want to be running the 16 as a spare for many kilometres as it will play havoc with the diffs / haldex.  205/60r16 would be a lot better but maybe won't fit in the spare wheel well?
