Buying Octavia advice please

Looking at chopping my Fabia VRS in for a Octavia elegance, want a VRS but out of reach for now.

 

What's people thoughts on the 1.4 TSI vs the 2.0 TDI, only do 10,000 a year so my thoughts are more on drive-ability. Is the 1.4 quiet? I've heard real MPG's of 48 from the petrol, is this achievable?

 

Also hatch vs estate? benefits of either?

 

If I'm struggling to source one with the Golus wheels, are they a straight swop on if I buy some? won't need speedo upgrading etc?

 

Also is the sports suspension easy to upgrade to?

You will really need to have a decent test drive in the mk3 Octy to decide if a non-vRS is for you as they may seem a bit sterile compared to your furby. Unless you've got a dog or need a large square load space for moving stuff like furnature the estate will only cost you more for what is the same car, with the same size boot below window level. If you decide the mk3 elegance isn't for you then maybe try a late fl mk2 Octy?

Seems like itll be fairly quick, albeit not VRS quick with the added benefit of not drinking oil.

Have 1.4 tsi. Engine is nice and quiet on idle. Can be heard abit when accelerating. Otherwise brilliant little engine :)

My advice is to test them.

I drove both and preferred the petrol. I calculated that the diesel shoul work out a bit cheaper over the lifetime, but it wasn't a marked enough difference to be the decider. With your mileage there's probably no financial advantage in the diesel (unless you keep it forever). I average around 47-48mpg in the 1.4, it was above 50 for the first 3000 miles but then I got less Eco. Sitting at 70 on a long run it can get high 50s. Doing lots of 2 mile journeys around town it gets as low as 30 although I went into London yesterday and got 49mpg on the trip computer doing 30 miles in 1hr45 mins!

The diesel is very refined and pretty quiet at speed, but the petrol's just a bit better at low speed in my opinion. The stop start seems a bit less intrusive in the petrol and I prefer the wider power band. And there's no DPF.

My wife preferred the engine note of the diesel though.

These are just my preferences, go and try them and see what you think.

I have the 1.4 TSI Elegance Hatchback manual version. Had it six months and driven about 5000 miles, including a 2000 mile round trip to Munich, Germany. Average MPG is 47.5 over the 5000 miles. Average urban is 40.6 MPG. As for the performance, the 1.4 TSI is very lively for its small size and is quicker from a standing start than most cars of a similar size with larger capacity engines. I find its not left wanting at the top end either, with good acceleration 70-90 MPH (German Autobahn, of course), even with a full load.

For me, the engine is very quiet and only becomes noticable when under acceleration from 70-90, but quietens down again when it reaches cruising speed at 90. Some of the motoring press have reported excessive wind noise at 70 on motorways (all versions) but I disagree completely. I think the car is comfortable, quiet and good to drive. It's let down by the firm ride over even the smallest of ripples in the road surface and such ripples cause a light vibration thoughout the car body, though it's not intrusive enough to detract from how good a car this is.

As for the 2.0 Diesel, I test drove one before I decided to go for the 1.4 petrol. True it was on 19" wheels, but I found the ride very harsh and it suffered very badly from the "low frequency boom", which is the subject of a topic on this forum. I don't think it's any quicker than the 1.4 TSI, but I know which is quieter. Downside of the petrol will be the MPG, but at 10000 miles per annum the cheaper cost of petrol, together with the cheaper purchase cost of the car will probably negate any savings from the diesel MPG.

Can't comment on the estate versus hatchback comparison, other than that the hatchback boot is cavernous.

The 2.0 diesel is very strong and punchy and in the long-run will probably be more reliable and hold its value higher. You can't a fault really with a 2.0 tdi estate, except it's a bit heavy at the front :)

I chose 1.8tsi for other reasons, but the petrol is noticeably quieter and now that winter has come you do feel much faster warming (my previous Octy was tdi).

I dont think there are many arguments against the estate apart from crosswinds at high speed. The more space you have, the better. Its a rule of thumb:)

I test drove both the 1.4 TSI DSG and the 2.0 TDI manual and the TSI won by a country mile, true the TSI gonna use more fuel (don't even consider my fuelly sig. I drive it like I just stole it) when used reasonable its only worst case 10mpg behind the TDI and on my 12K mile p.a. at UK prices its was something like 4-1/2 years to pay off the higher cost of buying the TDI.

 

Also the Elegance spec is a very nice place to spend some time which to me, didn't quite match up with the TDI's engine noise, also the TSI does warm up faster in the colder mornings which can only be a benefit, being lighter on the front end the tyres should last longer too, my old O2 could chew the fronts in 6-7k miles whereas I'm now at 7-1/2k on this TSI with a good 2-3mm left to the wear indicators.  The TDI has had issues with the DSG which have been reported as solved but, its not a match made in heaven and the DSG6 in the TDI requires more maintenance then the DSG7 in the TSI.  The estate seemed a lot more money for space I was unlikely to use often but, you may have different needs to me.

 

I'd recommend test driving both,certainly get the PCP figures worked out on all the options as the depreciation plays a large part in the amount you pay per month.

Going for the 1.4 TSI hatch, no oil use issues with these engines? also it doesn't need super unleaded like my VRS does it?

 

The car I want is 90 miles away and I have two small kids so tricky popping out for test drives etc, sure it'll drive good albeit a bit less feisty than the VRS but a lot more refined.

Rob, there is a lot of creature comforts in the Elegance that would cost a lot to put in the vRS and things can be done to that little 1.4 if you need more go during those Dad only driving days.

My first mods will be to get hold of some Golus wheels and then a tiny boot spoiler.

14 plate Elegance hatch with the 1.4 TSI DSG in silver, only got 6,000 miles on it.

 

Think it's completely standard, so no options but the only thing I wanted are the Golus which I'll sort, paid a little over £16k which seems good.

I see this comes once your choice is over, but anyway, you can see the links below for your reference (in french but data should be no issue to understand).

Both cars have very similar performances, with a very little advantage to the petrol one (maybe because of DSG on the TDI).

That's helpful thank you, looking forward to picking it up later this week. Hopefully sort the golus's out before then too.

Now up to just 250 miles on my new 1.4 TSi manual hatch and I have to say it is surprisingly smooth and quiet - more refined somehow than my much loved last car, a  Mk 2 1.8 TSi.

 

Plenty of punch, especially in sports mode, certainly does not feel disappointing after the 1.8, and probably will improve still more over a few thousand miles.

Personally I would not bother with any diesel when doing low annual mileage.

I had two fabia vRS estates there good car's but the octy is a lot better car
