Replacing Swing with Sat Nav unit in a Rapid

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

So, I'm seriously considering having the Swing radio in my Rapid Spaceback removed and replaced with a genuine Satnav head unit.

Apologies if these questions have been asked before, but would really appreciate some pointers on the following:

1) Amundsen, Amundsen+ or Columbus - which to go for and are there any compatibility issues that I need to be aware of?

2) Other than some tinkering with VCDS to get the new head unit talking with the Maxidot display, are there any other hardware or software considerations I need to be aware of (special cabling etc) when swapping the units?

3) Any suggestions on where (and how) to locate the GPS aerial?

4) What are the cost of the map updates on the Skoda head units?

5) My car already has Bluetooth handsfree and the USB+AUX In MDI interface - will these still work after the head unit change?

Thanks for any advice, and thanks for putting up with my newbie questions.

Cheers

Chris

Chris have you sorted this out yet?

for compatibilty with Rapid check this post http://www.skodacommunity.de/threads/oem-radio-navi-fse-mdi-im-fabia-5j-roomster-rapid-octavia-2-yeti-superb-ii-nachruesten.88413/

I just swapped my Swing with VW RNS315 (with bluetooth & rvc connector) this weekend. Still waiting for microphone to come from Germany (bought it for about 30€ from ebay), gps antenna was 10€ and that's it(also ebay) :)

everything is plug & play, and you need vcds to enable 37-Navigation in Can Gateway installation list..and to code you new unit also.

maps are quite expensive (140€+), but mine came with 2013 v4 maps preloaded so i'm good for now.

hmmm, i think MDI interface should also be plug&play...in rapid i think it is J650-MDI (6J0 035 342C / 5N0 035 342 E)

i do have a little problem - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/352321-humble-request-for-those-who-have-amundsen-and-bluetooth-fitted/

and i think i will go to the dealer and see what can be done.

Alas, this was a very old post you've replied to. Given nobody responded at the time, I ended up just buying a new Garmin sat nav unit.Thank you posting the above though, it's massively helpful and will be something I use when I do revisit my heading plans.

I'm now considering getting a DAB Bolero to replace the Swing (keeping the Garmin as my nav option), but it's not a priority right now as I've got some immediate family issues (my partner's mother passed away over the weekend) that trump fiddling with the car, so will likely revisit this later in the year.
