Winter tyre, pressures

Featured Replies

I know winter tyres have been discussed to within an inch of their lives on here, but one thing I would like to know is this. What pressures do you run them at. I have a set of 205/55 ×16's on steel wheels originally supplied by Skoda. Last year I run them at 2.2 bar on the front and 2.1 on the rear, as these are the pressures recommended for the larger 17" standard tyres.

Owners manual states winter tyres should be inflated 0.2 Bar higher than normal tyre pressure stated on fuel filler. I normally run my summer 17's at 33 PSI and my 215x60x16 winters at 35 PSI.

2.2bar all round when not fully loaded.

I'd contact the manufacturer of your tyres.

Although Skoda recommend increasing pressure by 0.2 bar, Nokian CS told me they recommend 2.7 bar front and rear.

I forget which tyre manufacturer I contacted once before, but they told me to run their winter tyres at normal pressures, whereas the car handbook said to run them slightly higher.

I'd be more inclined to trust the tyre manufacturer, so maybe contact them and ask them.

Put mine on today. Set to 2.2 Bar.

I don't know about winter vs summer, but the sticker inside the fuel flap on my Yeti shows pressures for both 16" and 17" wheels.

And the Handbook has specific notes about winter tyres.

I contacted Hankook, to ask their thoughts on this (they are the manufacturers of the winter tyres I bought from someone on here).

Their stance is that if the car manual states an increased pressure should be used for winter tyres, then follow the handbook advice.

Due to the rather large differences in recommended pressures from Skoda (2.2/2.4bar) and Nokian (2.7bar), I filled the email just in case there was any situation where the higher pressure was brought into question., RTC et al.

The tyre pressures for mine have 2.2 front, 2.2 rear for normal driving. For load / speed it's given as 2.4 front, 3.0 rear. The winter tyre figures say another +0.2, which doesn't mention if it's any different for the load/speed setting!

I prefer the handling and composure with tyre pressures closer to the load / speed settings, even though it's rarely heavily loaded. I run the summers at 2.4/2.7, and the winters at 2.5/2.8. If 3.0 (or even 3.2) is acceptable for the rear tyres I think running in between the lower & upper recommendations shouldn't be an issue.
