This car failed MOT last year due to exhaust issues. I assume what you've described about issues with exhaust is what happened in this case. It's replaced though.

 

The reason why I'm thinking about replacing timing chain or head gasket because there's absolutely no information about its history. I don't know when it was replaced or if it was even replaced at all.

 

I've checked the dipstick, the oil level is little low, so it needs replacing. The only issue is that I don't know what type of oil the previous owner used for this car and I don't know if it's safe to re-fill with different type of oil.

 

No, the exhaust valves are entirely different to the exhaust system.

 

The timing chain doesn't have a service interval and neither does the head gasket, so if it ain't broke...

 

I already said that you can use any multigrade engine oil for topping up!

Change the oil mate I would. After that unless the chain is noisy I would leave that. Also leave the head gasket unless your losing coolant/oil at an alarming rate or if it's mixing. Also check your exhaust if there is a lot of white smoke then that's coolant burning.

Otherwise oil change air filter usual stuff maybe flush coolant and refill get all the old fluids out

Some is normal when it cold like it is now so don't be alarmed if you see it. When I ment White smoke I ment coming out like a chimney a small amount that disappears quickly is normal in cold weather

Change all fluids and filters and maybe the coolant temp sensor oil pressure sensor and while you drain the coolant get a new expansion tank as the sensors can go in them.

Just new to skoads myself felt like I've owned one a lifetime already lol

Today I was driving the car. When coming to stop, the car shuddered for a microsecond and the power steering light came on and off in very quickly. This happened twice. Initially I assumed it was because I was driving very economically, so when coming to stop, I did not downshift early enough, forcing the car to gasp for petrol. But then I tried to purposely stall it at somewhere quiet, it just died quietly. So, it's probably something else (hopefully not!) is wrong with the car.

I don't know how you define 'driving very economically' on a 1.2, but in my 8v 1.4 mpi, I have to keep it between 2.5-3.5k to get the best mpg (somewhere around 28mpg while driving in the city). The engine temp is going up pretty quick (4-5mins) and then the mpg starts to get better. When driving under 1.5-2k, the engine heats up in a longer time, so the fuel consumption will be higher for a longer. Also, you might damage your spark plugs, O2 sensors, catalyst, get (a lot of) condensation in the exhaust and so on. These petrol engines are pretty happy with middle range revs. 

The car shudders and shakes at idle, this is common and happens on both the 6v and 12v cars (as i found out thinking it was a problem!) some things to look out for is the exhaust valves going, it's a big and expensive job unless someone on here is super nice to you. 

White coming out of the exhaust is normal, both my 1.26v classic and my friends 1.4 12v can confirm this.

 

I didn't get central locking with my 06 classic either

 

The steering light warning shouldn't come on, this is an issue with the power steering and not to do with the car needing petrol (correct me if I'm wrong here?) If it's gone off i'd leave it and hope it never comes back (has happened to my friends skoda) otherwise it could be something worth getting checked out!

 

Keep this post updated, I'm having all sorts of issues with my 1.2 skoda classic HTP which I'm working on, be good to compare!

I was keeping it below 2k rpm, sometimes below 1.5k if the road is clear enough so I don't brake and accidentally stall the car. I'll keep it above 2k from now then, thanks.

Yeah I agree, shuddering and shaking is quite normal but in this particular situation, the car shakes more violently than usual, while simultaneously showing the power steering light, lasting less than a second all in.

 

I'll post this thread if anything happens.
