Firstly I'll mention that I'm not an expert, BUT having had issues with pop ups and browser hijacks in the past I've resolved them by finding where the virus files are located and manually deleting the folders.

The following may help (taken from a Google groups page):

To resolve the issue, please carry out the following steps carefully in the following order:

1.       Uninstall suspicious programs from Control Panel

Windows 8 users: Press Ctrl+X and select Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Windows Vista/7 users: Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Windows XP users:  Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Programs and Features.

Look for unwanted programs (especially ones with a similar name to the unwanted extension) and uninstall them.

2.       Remove the unwanted extension from Google Chrome

Click on the Menu icon at the top right of the browser (or the Wrench in outdated versions of Chrome) > Tools > Extensions. Tick the Developer Mode checkbox.

Write down or save the ID of the unwanted extension shown below the extension title.

3.       Remove the related registry entries

Press the Windows Key+R and type “regedit” (without quotes).

In the Registry Editor, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE, then select Policies > Google > Chrome > ExtensionInstallForcelist.

NB: If you cannot find ExtensionInstallForcelist in this place, try selecting HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE, then select Policies > Google > Chrome > ExtensionInstallForcelist.

Remove the registry key which has a Data value the same as the extension's ID which you wrote down or saved above. Right click on the registry key and select Delete. Accept the warning by selecting Yes.

4.       Remove the extension’s files

Press the Windows Key+R and type:

Windows Vista/7/8 users: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions
Windows XP users: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Find the folder with the ID of the extension and delete it.

5.       Success!

The extension should now be completely removed.

Turn off your sons machine

Take hard drive out of sons machine

Boot into safe mode on the machine two hard drives

Once into safe mode scan the hard drive you just put in with all the programs mentioned above

Clean whatever it finds

Use the options in CCleaner to uninstall browser protection.

Reeboot the machine into normal windows and re scan the hardrive with all the programs listed above until they are clean.

Put your sons hard drive back into his machine

Reeboot the machine

Uninstall the browsers without saving any of their settings

Re install the browsers

Backup sons data and reinstall windows 8? Windows 8 reinstall is super-dooper easy and it will definitely clear the bug.

if all else fails download and run combofix

Ccleaner?

Deffo works?

CCleaner is from Piriform, all of their software is good stuff, but I dont know if it can get rid of your problem.

I use REVO uninstaller every time - it finds all of the registry bits that the others leave behind.

Buy an Apple [emoji6] alternatively the remove the HD drive is the best bet. I got sick of flattening my hard drive on Windows and staying again because it had become bloated, slow or something had associated itself with something. There's a lot to be said for a closed operating system.

Once I have a PC up and running the way I want it, I take an Acronis True-Image of the HDD; wiping the HDD data and replacing it with this image takes a few minutes if anything goes wrong.

Ccleaner will let you uninstall the browser safe search stuff

There is a lot to be said for this approach (so long as you have the space for the image on a backup)

If i lived closer i would do it for you.

Dont be concerned about taking hard drive out of things, just google it for guides if you are worried

It is a laptop .....

Should still be possible - just means running it out of the case (unless you have a 2.5" caddy).

Done that many times in the past with disk drives/ HD drives etc. Even ran a motherboard on the table (out of the case) for test purposes - couldnt be bothered rebuilding the computer just to strip it back when I found the faulty parts so took it out, and ran it, adding the parts one at a time to eliminate the faulty part.

No danger to it so long as you remember to earth yourself (with the case connected to a power supply for instance)

It is a laptop .....

Hard drive will just have a little plastic cover over it usually held down by little screws.

Hard drive then comes out easily and can be plugge into a spare socket on your workings pcs motherboard

FIXED!!! :-)

Well, sort of.

I got so fed up, so swop laptops with my son.

So when I got his laptop - I simply deleted his account.

And can't see BrowserSafeGuard nor the dreaded "Google website is untrustworthy" anymore....

Fingers crossed...
