Vrs 225/45/17 Tyre Recommendations

Featured Replies

Morning, I am in the market for a full set of tyres and looking at going down the 225/45/17 route due to them being much cheaper then 205/45/17. Does anybody have any recommendations for tyres I should be looking at?

I've found a couple but not sure which is best, unless theres something else?

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

Goodyear Efficient Grip

Hankook Ventus Prime 2 K115

Toyo Proxes T1-Sport

Uniroyal Rainsport 3

Thanks in advance

First ones

I had the Hankook's on my last car and was far from impressed. No real feel and a very squishy sidewall. The Toyo's are a great tyre but consensus here before is that they aren't suited to the weight of the Octy.

From your list I'd probably opt for the RS3's.

However... if you're not looking to spend big bucks look at the Falken FK453's. Seriously. Truely fantastic tyre for the money, wet or dry. If you're not so bothered about saving some cash, get Michelin PS3's - there really is no contest vs anything else.

I've currently got the Falkens on at the minute, been through a full set in 12 months, although car does need tracking.

Probably. I'm now on nearly 8 months use at 40 miles per day and they barely look worn....

I've got contisport contact3 on mine and I'm impressed with them. Good grip wet or dry little bit noisy but wearing very well. As for tyre size standard is 205/50/17 not 45 which I think you said. I've heard pluses and minuses tbh but a lot have switched to the wider tyre and say the car tramlines a lot more and fuel economy suffers a little bit as well. I stuck with standard my car costs too much to run as it is!!

I currently have the standard size, but looking at prices its a lot cheaper to go down the 225/45/17 route. What other tyre size options do I have?

Pretty much 205/50, 215/45 or 225/45. The 205 is standard.

As said above, 215 or 225 with the smaller sidewall will handle and grip better and give you more confidence generally but the trade off is slightly higher fuel consumption and a tendency to tramline.

Outside of that unless you start going for very weird sizes or stretch then that's about it.

I have standard fit URS2s. When I need new ones I'm going for the RS3s. Heard very good things about the F1 asymmetric as well.

But then I also have a set of track wheels.

cheers, ive got the 453's at the minute and like I said after 12 months/9000 miles there ready to be changed. Suppose it won't help having the tracking out (car does pull to the left quite badly) and a lot of spirited driving.

I've gone for Goodyear efficient grip performance, but in a 16" due to the savings in the cost of the tyres. I did try 225's but the extra cost of the fuel exceeded the savings in the cost of the tyres, wasn't impressed with the tramlining either. So far the 16's seem just as good as the 17" 452's that were on before, the ride has improved over the pot holes at least and seem to match the coilovers well

Continentals ?

I've never owned a car that's driven badly on them. (Grip/ride/noise/wear/brake  balance always spot on)

Vredenstein Ultrac sessanta's get my vote. Very very good

yeah brilliant tyre. Imho very underrated. A bit expensive I suppose but you get what you pay for with rubber.

TS830's in 195/65/15 but mine is 4x4 and will take 15's great fun and predictable in the dry/wet/swimming pool/snow :D much improved pot hole experience too.

I have the Eagle F1 Asymettric 2s and am very pleased with them. The Efficient grips are good too (were on my car when I got it and my sister has a set on her car). The Ventus Prime 2s are a good mid range tyre but not sporty - better ride comfort but less steering feel. I've also had the Hankook Ventus S1 Evos and they are really good - more sporty than the Ventus Prime 2 but not quite as good as the Eagle F1s. Would not touch Toyos. Not tried the Uniroyal Rainsports but have heard mixed reviews of them from all the car forums I'm on. Don't think I've heard a bad word about the Eagle F1s!

I had Sport Contact 3s on my Clio and they weren't up to much in the wet compared to Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2s or Yokohama AD08Rs. Not saying they aren't good all round but I think there are better options for performance and price.

... I had 19 inch Sport Contacts on a new Chrysler Crossfire I had for 3 months (changed jobs not long after)  and it was amazingly good in the snow despite being RWD and with not exactly the most sophisticated suspension in the world. Currently have them on 18's on my Superb and they are planted in wet weather. Not sure what they are like on Clios though
