Honest Opinions On The Mkiii

Featured Replies

The suspension has just been checked by another dealer when they serviced it, so Im guessing they would have noticed it if they were still in place.

I think its pretty much down to the fact the car has such a stiff setup. Plus the torsion beam suspension.

Not necessarily, another user on here who had been complaining about his suspension since day 1 and had a 10k service discovered the transport blocks were still in place when they checked themselves.

I'm booked in for investigation on the suspension next Wed, like JJ, I've not been happy from day one and have finally decided to take some action following reports of modified dampers and a smoother ride on recent build cars. Mine is definitely crashy over bumps and potholes, feels like the dampers are hitting their limit of travel but when I take SWMBOs MkII over the same roads, it glides over the bumps by comparison to my MkIII. I just hope they accept that as mine was April 2013 build, they will switch the dampers to the latest part nos. I know some have reported that the rear dampers have been revised, but does anyone know if the front dampers were also revised?

I reckon they have altered more than just the dampers. But its only the dampers you will get altered.

Assuming my blocks have been taken out, some of my harshness is no doubt down to what im used to, but it cant just be that.

If you have those crappy Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres I had on the hatch I would put a fair bit of the ride harshness down to them.

I have exactly those :D

Who knows... there is also a tyre pressure factor involved in equation if its too high.

I will put winter's on soon (Continental WinterContact TS850) and will see then..

Posts #24 and #76 are of interest :)

Wheres the 'up yours' emoticon?!!! :D

As i said though, i never actually managed to check the shocks.

:)

Now stop going on about my brown seats :)

Those Dunlops are awful, when I put my winters on last year (TS850s) it was a completely different car to drive. Some of that will be narrower 16" rims, but some down to decent tyres instead of Dunlop hard as nails crap tyres.

Do they actually make a difference to the harshness?

I know i checked the tyre pressures frequently, and they are kept about 31 to 32psi. The norm.

Anyway, yes i do have these tyres.

Buy me new tyres and I promise never to mention the fact you should be taking toilet paper out with you :D

The only difference between what I have now and what I have traded in is the brand of tyres, the redesigned rear shocks and the fact I now have an estate with factory sports suspension.

The two cars are like night and day - so much quieter and smoother, and I am on the factory sports suspension now so should in theory be a little stiffer!

Those Dunlops are some of the noisiest and hardest compound tyres I have ever had fitted to a car in 25 years of driving. The wet grip is awful on them.

Dont need to, you cant see the stains

Well perhaps one day I may decide its worthwhile swapping my 3 tyres that are currently on Dunlops. One tyre is on Michelin

Thats true, its more than just a stain

I've also got the Dunlop Sport Maxx GTs, which may also be adding to the problem, but they won't bl00dy wear out!!

Yet checking up on the tyre, they claim an A for wet grip, and one of the quietest noise figures. Something isnt right.

I know, but they are really noisy - just open the window as you drive along and on rough surfaces they are horrendous. The compound is really hard. My fronts had done 24k when I traded it in (6k on winters out of 30k) and still had 5mm of tread left on them!

I used to get 25k out of a set of fronts on the MkII and then they were less than 2.5mm and needed binning.

This is true. My tyres still had 7mm at over 8k

I  found Vredestein a good compromise on price, wear, noise and grip on my Mk. 2

When was the suspension revised? My car is APR 2014 build on 18" wheels. Suspension is definitely firm but not uncomfortable. I can only feel the firm ride when the tyres hit expansion gaps in bridges and some potholes.

You'll have the revised shocks then. Mine has them, and thats about Oct 2013 build.

I can feel the harshness on any little dips in the surface, or small bumps.

So people who went from a mk2 vRS to a mk3 non-vRS seem a little disappointed, what about those that went vRS to vRS?

I went from a Mk2 vRS to a Mk3 vRS, and my perception is that the Mk3 ride is a little firmer/harder; I'd be minded to put that down to the Mk3 having lower profile tyres and therefore less give in the sidewall.

Have you checked the transport blocks have been removed?

I had another look at my front dampers today, managed to lift up the dust cover about 2-3cm, but could not see any shiney metal parts, the bottom section is black and lowest 4-5 cm feels almost the full diameter of the dust cover, further up I can feel the diameter reduces as you can squash the cover more. Both sides are the same, not sure if any transport blocks are still in there but if they are, 36k on transport blocks might be some kind of record!

They look like this, so you probably need to jack it up to see if the plastic blocks are still on the stainless steel centre piston rod
