Hunt for new car - Think found SCAM on Autotrader

Featured Replies

So as per my previous thread on here looking at getting a new superb (well new to me).

Anyways was not thinking of changing till Jan/Feb but keep an eye on Autotrader and the likes.

So yesterday came accross an advert for a 2008 SKODA SUPERB 2.0 5DR 170 CR ELEGANCE DSG for the tidy sum of £4850 65k on the clock thought it was too good to be true but anyways I messaged them as it was gone from Autotrader and they got back to me straight away with the follow - WHICH SOUNDS CRAZY TO BE HONEST......OPIONS WELCOME - Am I allowed to post the seller/site from autotrader?

One other thing when I did email them through their dealer website they dont have the car up now either. From their response they received the mail via <[email protected]>

Have a read see what yous think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there,

First of all I want to thank you for questions about SKODA SUPERB 2.0 5DR 170 CR ELEGANCE DSG

The car is in perfect condition.
The total price is £4850 including delivery to your address. Price reduced for a quick sale.

This is my first time selling a car over the Internet and I think the best way is to use a third party company that
protects buyers and sellers. They inspect the car for damages and its mechanical condition before starting the
transaction. They will also give you a 5 days inspection period (this means that after you receive the car and
papers, you have 5 days to use it and if something goes wrong or if the car is not as described by me, you will
get your money back).

I have all the papers signed and I'm ready to make a deal as soon as possible. The delivery will take no more
than 2-3 days and the car will be delivered at your home address.

So, if you really want it, you will be able to have it in no time!
Because of the nature of my work, I am normally travelling and not constantly present in the UK, and this is the
reason why I prefer to use Third Party Company.

If you are interested in buying it, then I will wait for your answer to tell you how Escrow works.

Scam for sure. Walk away. Actually.... Run!! Runaway!!

Run as fast as you can, a typical scam in the making and why Autotrader would have pulled it.

OK cool thought that alright. You would wanna be mad to buy a car like that. Do you think they catch people out?

I think Autotrader would be mighty interested to hear about this, as would trading standards/ the police. You had the foresight to recognize the warning clues, someone else might not be so lucky.

The escrow scam is written out on the PH forum link below

The wording screams SCAM. You are doing the right thing by walking away. Iform the authorities to stop some unsuspecting third party from being stung.

You'd have to be mad. Surely people don't fall for it.

That's not even a good effort at not appearing like a scam! lol

Yes, sadly they catch people out - the pay off is so large that they only need to catch the occasional person to make it worthwhile.  The usual scam is the person lists a desirable car way under its value, claims they have moved abroad and the car is worthless and they will use a third party company to handle the money and protect you from fraud and they'll ship the car for free.  It's been going on for years and there's usually plenty of them going on at any one time and they reappear as quickly as they're reported.

I don't know if it's changed but Autotrader didn't seem bothered about them previously, given the autotrader system matches up the car details I wouldn't think it would be hard to flag up cars that were being sold way under value to be manually approved in the cases where there's a genuine reason.  Also many of them put a phone number or mail address on the pictures which should be reasonably easy to find as well with a bit of tweaking.

John

There are literally loads of very low price cars with an email address on the image, saying some tosh about please email as I'm usually away from the phone etc all some sort of scam. I just avoid 100%

That's actually a deliberate tactic. By writing the adverts in this way they know that smarter buyers will spot it a mile off, and they are only left with gullible fools.

This is for a different type of scam but the reasoning is the same

Buying a car should be a smooth transaction.

This seems a bit long winded..

You put for the car wait 3-4 days then have it another 5 days *******s
