Squeal like a piggy

Featured Replies

Gutted as my trusty Octy (had it 5 years now) sounds like a banshee being abused whenever I brake to a stop.

I think it's the rears, as if I apply the handbrake and come to a slow from speed it squeals a lot.

The rear discs and pads were replaced last year by me (can't remember the make I used).

I've decided to start cleaning up the rears to see if that solves it.  The rear discs have a corrosion lip which I got rid off and I managed to clean the drivers side before it got dark.  Nothing was catching and the piston went back in easy enough with the rewind tool.

When it came to the brake test after putting it back together: Initial braking I had no squeak.  Applied the handbrake a few times and it was squeak city!!

I have ordered some of those return springs off ebay and I am going to have a nosey at the handbrake assembly tomorrow.

Are there any other areas I should check out too??

It's driving me nuts.

Have you applied a little Copper Slip (Copper Grease) on the rear of the Brake pads?

Just a standard thing to do when fitting pads, & again after time.

Yup always do that (forgot to mention that doh!) Applied some to the anti squeal shim slider thingys too.

Are the breaks bled properly ? Mine used to do this when my rear breaks Wernt bled and the pads were just say touching you could push the car backwards with the handbreak on

Have you cleaned the sliding area for the pads.

Also why are you using the handbrake to stop from speed as it is really just a parking brake.

Whoop the squeal has gone!!

Cleaned the passenger side rear up and all is well. Gave the handbrake assembly a good clean up too. Going to leave using it that until my springs turn up.

I know it's a parking brake but it's a good test to see where the squealing is coming from.
