Washer Fluid

Featured Replies

Probably not the most technical question to ask. Just recently have found the windscreen really bad in the rain, when I try to clean the screen with the washer it just smears. Have used RainX, but don't like it. I know all the, put vinegar in the bottle etc. What do you find best ?  :rain:  :nerd:

I clean Glass or mirrors with White Vinegar but have never put it in the Washer Bottle.

I also use Rain X on Windows, but not the Windscreen.

I just use Windscreen Wash and now Winter Windscreen wash.

?

What type do you use in the Washer Bottle?

Clean the wiper blades

From experience the smearing is likely to be a result of the application of RainX, often not enough water used when it’s being wiped onto the screen.

Back to the screen wash question I have found Shell’s ready mixed fluid to be on the face of it expensive but seems good value in the end as it lasts and does a very good job of cleaning the windscreen in all weathers.

Sorry took me time to get back on this. I use ready mixed Tesco or Aldi screen wash. RainX was on another car. Yes I do clean the wiper blades when I wash the car. Maybe need to pay a bit more than £1.99 for 5 lts . Will start saving now. Thanks.

Lidl screenwash concentrate, it's good down to -60 degrees if used neat.

Hi Rob, didn't know it got that cold down there. Good point, buy non mixed and don't water down too much.

silly question, when did you last replace the wiper blades?

I always replace mine autumn time ready for winter as the UV of the summer sun (when we see it) hardens the rubber of the blades

bit like tyres I usually try to time the replacement for late summer autumn time then good tread for winter

I work in a chemical plant, a small amount of isopropanol in the washer bottle stops it freezing ever again :-)

It's the main component in de-icer .

I specifically requested not to have my windscreen washer fluid topped up at the last service as I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself and there's always fluid in the reservoir. I was then told why I should use Skoda washer fluid by the Skoda lady, eg one of our customer's ended up with fluid in his boot because he continued to operate the switch when nothing was coming out.  The fluid had frozen in the pipe it blew at a joint.  I said that he probably had the incorrect mix of fluid in the reservoir.  When I said I used Halfords windscreen washer fluid she was quite sniffy about it!

I use oil that meets the VW spec but I don't think there's any need to worry about washer fluid!
