Wet Carpet - A Pillar Leaking Not Door Seals

You wont be able to get a mirror in the hole, i can only get 2 fingers in there and due to it being in a foot well i cant see much. Torch wouldnt fit in there either due to access issues plus theres a type of plate above the hole, but the light idea isnt too bad. What drain holes do you mean, the ones from the plenum chamber that runs down inside the wheel arch. Their clear.

  • Solved it about 3 weeks ago and its absolutely bone dry in mine now!!!!!!!.   I still don't know where the water was coming in even with an endoscope/inspection camera but i know what i did to stop

  • I'd check under the wippers grill. I've always had in there a mini ecosystem. The water was/is coming through the polen filter.

  • A 12v bulb on some wire would though.

One of my mates has an endoscope so Im going to borrow that. I think I'm also going to find a multi story car park somewhere with some 2 litre bottle of water and water my windscreen. I will post back with updates.

Had the windscreen replaced yesterday and...........still leaking haha. I cant win lol. I even took the roof rails off to see how if there was any sign of water ingress under there but nothing. Im fresh out of ideas now.

hmm, plan b? fill it up until it comes out where its coming in? (disconnect battery and dry thoughourly afterwards)

Not a bad plan, its better than anything else ive got haha

Oh dear.

Any sign it's been in a accident at all?

Wondering if a seam has been split behind wing somewhere that wasn't noticed when repaired?

None at all. I had the car checked over before i bought it and inspected by a garage. I bought it off my mate who's really anal about his cars. This was his third fabia, he's now in his 5th haha. Its just one of those rare anomalies i think.

Well another week down the line and im still none the wiser after searching for the same problem on other platforms like Polo's and Ibiza's.

To show just how bad the volume of water is here's some pics i took this morning.

So you've had a hose on it while you look inside with the endoscope?

If it runs in when the hose is sprayed between the wing and pillar it will be a wing off job, not too big a job just a pain as the rear of wing is attached with polyurethane type sealer which you need to cut through carefully without damaging the wing.

Go through a car wash, that'll be an easy way to find where its coming from!

Finished work at 12 today with a new stereo after sum little buggers stole my Alpine a couple of month ago. Seen as it was a nice day i decided to take the arch liner out to see if i could see anything. Found a couple of suspect spots with signs of water.

Got some plumbers gold out and sealed them so now looks like this...

I also took the wiper assembly out again and sealed all along the seams. Im not i overly hopeful but next stage in wing off so i would really like this to work haha.

I've been looking for an endoscope today, Mapins had one in the sale for £70 but they haven't got any left and i missed one on eBay by like 5 seconds, proper fml.  Going to be smashing Google now for a bit to see if there are any sales on an endoscope.  With one of those i can put it in through a hole in the A pillar and get someone to water my car for me.  I've tried this already but without being able to actually see where the water is coming everything is pretty futile.

I've Googled for all sorts of images from various VAG platforms (with not much success) and i've only come across 1 person with the same problem and a new windscreen cured his (on here) and i've had a new windscreen and it made no difference haha.

This would be an awesome idea if there weren't so many holes in the pillar. The water would leak out of the door stay before it got up to the first hole which is opposite the control module, then another by the fuse box so filling from the bottom hole upwards is not an option.

We'll my endoscope's arrive last week and straight down the A pillar they went. I can see a pool of water and wetness in various places but could not see where the water was coming in at all. So today i removed the inner arch, wiper assembly and the front wong. I sealed every seam imaginable. Still not hopeful on this though. Next will be a case of having to get someone to strip the dash out and and everything else they can think off and seal everything again.

I have a feeling its coming in here somewhere.

Might be a good idea to buy a car cover or 1/2 car cover.

Solved it about 3 weeks ago and its absolutely bone dry in mine now!!!!!!!.

I still don't know where the water was coming in even with an endoscope/inspection camera but i know what i did to stop it.

All in the same session....

Remove the wiper linkage - I've done a guide on this so just search my posts.

Remove drivers wheel and the arch liner, super easy to do......all that took no more than 20 mins.

OPTIONAL - Removed drivers wing (i don't think this was the issue at all now but did it more as a 'rule everything out' option but once i'd removed it there wasn't much going on).

I also ran the finest bead of CLEAR plumbers gold across the top of every part that the door attaches to the A pillar i.e door strap, rubber wire housing thing, door hinges etc....you can't tell.

Then i gave every single seam a throughout looking over with a torch looking for the slightest hole or suspect discoloured area. I then went along every seam with plumbers gold sealant both in the arch and in the plenumb chamber (where the wipers sit) paying particular attention to corners in the area of the bonnet release cable (under the windscreen more of less) as any more further forward then the leak wouldn't have been present where it was.

Took me about 2-3 hours all in all working at a slowish pace to ensure i hadn't missed anything.  I will say though that my leak was extreme in that i've only ever known 1 other Fabia to leak in the bottom of the A pillar like mine and he solved his with a windscreen replacement.  Well i had my screen resealed and it didn't solve the problem so i had to go big or go home.

The underlay have been out of the car drying for about 2 months and the interior is all super dry.

Any thing else you want to know ask away.

Well done sticking at it!

So you didn't actually find/see the point of the leak, but it must have been some dodgy seam sealer when car was built?

I reckon you might be right about it being the stuff in the door hinge area; a lot of water seems to course down there.

I took this picture the other day while in the area:

I remember wondering at the time if the wetness around those fittings might have any relevance to your leak, but forgot to mention it.

  • 11 months later...

I'm still having the same problem I know this an old post so will try the things you have done mine only seems to get wet after a really heavy pour down but I've tried pouring water on windscreen scuttle panel etc with no luck ha ha post-123262-14553807321545_thumb.jpg
