Looking at Octys, Diesel or Petrol?

Hi there good people of Brisk!

 

Been a while but I could finally be heading back to actual Skoda ownership, rather than just selling them.

 

I’m currently driving an A4 Avant, but due to my wifes Golf being far older and less safe, she is now ferrying herself and mini-spats about in my A4.

 

This leaves me in the Golf GTTDi 115bhp. Although its got a silly tuning box on it so goes way better than the supposedly listed bhp ;)

 

But I maybe in a position to look to replace said Golf and I miss having an estate so I’ve been looking at a few from the VAG stable.

 

I haven’t decided on money but sub 4k is about right and I’ve nailed it down to Octy estate or Audi A6 estate.

 

Now I first simply looked at 1.9tdi versions as I know that engine pretty well (the golf has it as does our Audi) But I suddenly found myself looking at Vrs petrol estate in the price bracket and that threw me.

 

I loved the time I had with the vrs when I was selling them. But I’ve not really looked into them since.

 

Can some fellow Vrs petrol owners clue me in with realistic mpg and running costs?

 

I would be looking at an engine with 100-130k on the clock. Whereas I know a good TDI will get past 180k as we have a Golf in the family that’s on 180k and still going strong, but my knowledge of recent VAG petrols is lacking.

 

BTW I mainly use my car 24 mile round trip per day, mainly 50mph to 70ish roads and some traffic. The golf gets 40mpg.

I tend to average around 24-28 mpg in mine with my usual town + brief motorway driving. I believe most people tend to average over 30 though so that may just be my driving! If I take it for a long run it gets around 40-42 mpg.

 

The basic service costs won't really be much different from your 1.9tdi imo (filters, spark plugs etc). I had the cambelt + water pump changed for about £350 but people have gotten it cheaper. They're meant to be done every 4 years or 60k so be careful of that because I got stung as I didn't negotiate it out of the price I purchased the car for. I paid £320 for a set of 4 decent tyres delivered to my house.

 

Mine is fairly heavy on oil and so far since April, I've used around 3 litres of oil topping it up. Quite alot of them have this problem but quite alot of them are fine, that's really luck of the draw it seems. Other than that, it's been the most problematic car I've owned, and the place I bought it from got sick of me going back with issues. I believe that generally they are pretty reliable though so it's probably not going to be a common theme in this thread.

+1 not enough miles for diesel.

 

I sold my VRS TFSI with 83k on the clock, I'd have had no worries about the engine sailing past 100k and further.

+3 At that short trip, you would need to definitely not get an Octavia with a DPF :o :o :o But looking at 1.9's would be safe. But as above if that's your mileage, petrol at same budget would get you a lower mileage and or younger car.  

 

ps. metallic race blue ones are faster and get better mpg FACT! 

The Race Blue vRS's are also worth more as it's the best colour......gets coat....

If I'd known about DPFs and EGRs I would have bought a petrol Roomster in 2010 when we got ours.

 

It's now in the garage having a replacement EGR valve fitted circa £700.  It's only done 17000 in 4 years.

 

Now I'm umming and ahhing whether to chop it in for a petrol Roomster.
