Featured Replies

Hello guys.

Im new to this forum, ive allready tried some danish forums, but with no luck. So i thought i would try asking you experts :)

So my car a Felicia 1999 1.3 MPI wont start. There wasnt no warning signs, or anything else, i was going to the mailbox turned off the engine. Like 1min after , the engine didnt start at all...

Ive tried replacing the ignition coil, and sparks with no luck. So i got a VAG-COM on it, and got this out of it.

I really hope you guys can help me out with my lovely felicia, and get it to run again!

Unless you played with them trying to start the engine, errors 518 and 519 are most likely from bad wiring of  the Throttle Position Sensor and Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor, connectors. Disconnect them, clean the pins then spray with WD40. Wiggle the wires to check their state. Plug connectors back.

Error 537 is more tricky because it can be an effect to something before lambda sensor, not the sensor itself. Inspect very well the entire length of the lambda sensor cable. Look for cracks, melts, etc.

Then go to basics: spark, fuel pressure.

Clean errors, start the engine.

I will look into it right away tomorrow, and get back with some information on what i did.. The funny thing is, that i actually had get the engine to run.. But it was only by towing it for a few miles.. And it couldnt hold idle...

The funny thing is, that i actually had get the engine to run..

That is consistent with VAG-COM's report 'intermittent'. On the other hand, cold weather worsens and reveals every imperfection. Most problems happen from dirt, corrosion, age, lack of maintenance. Autumn is the time we should raise the bonnet, do some cleaning, check things and winterize the car. There is another member that had similar problems, have a look at newest topics.

Okay, so i looked in to the map sensor, and the throttle position sensor contacts. Cleaned them, and cleared the errors, and turned the ignition on and the engine didnt start.... Ive also cleared the intake manifold, and emptyed the fuel bridge and when i put it all together my engine startet.. Again, only for a couple of min until it hit idle, then it died again. I also noticed that my spark plugs are all wet, but they are sparkling.

There are many question marks in your last message. Please try to answer all.

  • what can you tell about the integrity of the oxygen sensor cable?
  • what means "cleared the intake manifold" ??
  • what is a "fuel bridge"??
  • did you check if any error codes reappeared after a couple of engine start tryouts?
  • how did you check you have strong spark?

  • what can you tell about the integrity of the oxygen sensor cable? - That cable looks fine, and dosnt look like its broken.

  • what means "cleared the intake manifold" ?? - With Cleared, i mean ofc cleaning it... And by that i also mean the thing where the throttle sensor is.

what is a "fuel bridge"?? - The so called bridge where the fuel injectors are mounted, sometimes i mess up my translating from Danish to English.

did you check if any error codes reappeared after a couple of engine start tryouts? - No errors after the tryout.

how did you check you have strong spark? - Only by the look of the eye, ive also been replacing the ignition coil.

Let's assume there is good spark, based on your description (the engine occasionaly starts but doesn't keep the idle speed) and the replacement of the ignition transformer.

Next obvious step would be to take out the throttle body and clean it thoroughly. Check the integrity of the square gasket under it or better replace it. Check hoses for any small crack. Put throttle body back, do a throttle body reset, then start the engine.

If the car still doesn't hold idle speed, based on your observation about 'fuel bridge' (aka fuel injectors rail) I would recommend to change all O-rings of injectors.

I found out when i cleaned the intake manifold that there was a little fuel in it?

I think that what you call "intake manifold" is in fact the throttle body. I suggest you write in Dannish and underneath write the Google translation in English. The throttle body sits on top of the intake manifold which is a set of 4 pipes that allow the air mixed with fuel from injectors to enter into combustion chamber.

Normally there should be no fuel accumulated inside throttle body. The throttle body is an air valve.

When you started the engine, did you see black smoke out the exhaust pipe? Because if you did, that indicates a very rich air/fuel mixture (wet spark plugs you said) and I will tell you where that excess of fuel is coming from.

Well it was dark and i didnt notice if it was black, but i do remember it smoked alot more then usual, my old sparks witch where like 4 months old was indeed black

I made a few suggestions at post #8. Did you try any of them?

About too much fuel in the combustion chamber. I know of three possibilities:

  • one or more fuel injectors are stuck open
  • the electric valve of the charcoal canister is stuck open
  • the coolant temperature sensor failed

The first two are more probable to cause a no start problem for a cold engine. The last one can cause a no start problem only if the engine is warm. Start by checking the coolant temperature sensor. If the car starts with the engine cold, monitor the coolant temperature with VAG-COM and see if the indications are right till the engine is warmed up.
