the dreaded festive mot

Featured Replies

I had been dreading this big time, the wife's been stressing also.

"Sorry mate it's failed...........on 1 tyre" tester said.

Total result, only advisory is a slight exhaust leak/wisp which will be getting upgraded for my stage 2 hopefulness ;)

The tester is known for being strict, he gave my car a glowing report, happy days :)

An MOT tester should not be strict or lenient. His job is to test the vehicle in the correct manner, and to satisfy himself that the minimum standards with regard to testable items have been met, or otherwise.

^^Agreed, and it would be nice to know that EVERY MOT tester is looking to fulfil the objectives of the test, and not subjectively judge either way. It is however nice to find a garage or tester who you feel you can trust and rely on to conduct the test and any associated work accordingly. This can be hard to find, think I'm lucky having a choice of 2 good garages, although I trust one more than the other, even though they seem to be fulfilling tester criteria equally.

All that said, congratulations, hope my New Year test goes as well, maybe even better?!

I totally agree with you, my wife and kids travel in the car and I wouldn't trade their safety to save a few quid, especially having just changed the timing belt/water pump etc a few weeks before, just glad it hasn't cost the earth like a lot of other cars I've owned ;)

Yeah just had my timing belt and pump done too, with mods and other bits its cost me enough this year as it is (all routine stuff mind, apart from sticky thermostat). Hope it will pass, but the MOT is there for your own peace of mind as well, so if it fails so be it, it will get sorted.

Mine needs a stat too, I changed the temp sensor with some improvement but not completely cured.

Yours will be fine mate :)

Cheers, cant think of any reason why it will fail, bushes will be the biggest worry. It will be the cars first with me. In the receipts it has had one set of ARBS in its lifetime so far (70,000 miles) so they should be ok. Just keep my fingers crossed. My garage are impressed with it as an example and its been in for a couple of things and theyve never noticed anything.

Er, slight contradiction here mate, if you've failed on a tyre then it should have already been changed and was clearly compromising the safety of the vehicle and its occupants. An MOT isn't the only time of year you should inspect your car...

Always a relief to get another 12month ticket :)

No contradiction, I would have changed it had I known, (damage to inside wall) 1st mot on this car for me and I've covered 5k in it, the tyre had loads of tread left but hey ho, no problem ;)

Better get that tracking adjusted/check all ball joints thoroughly then. Shouldn't be wearing on the inside...

Is it on springs/dampers or coilovers?, is it on spiders or more exotic wheels?

17" spiders, standard suspension, the tyre wasn't worn on the inside, had a gash in the inside sidewall, possibly due to contact with something on the road, not to my knowledge so must have been the previous owner

All straightforward then - good job they spotted it wasn't it, could have been nasty. , neighbour had this on his ford when a roadspring snapped at the bottom coil and split the tyre, put him in a ditch for the night.

Yeah I felt a bit sick when I heard about it, think I've had a lucky escape.

that's a nightmare story mate, hope all was ok

Yeah, all ok, just a badly bruised ego and a big hole in his wallet. :giggle:

Think I'll be checking my inside sidewalls more often...
