Favorit driveshaft oil seal, which one to use?

Featured Replies

Hope someone out there can help.

I am in the process of replacing a right hand driveshaft oil seal on a 1994 Favorit. I have been supplied with two very similar seals (from Skoda) which have slightly different part numbers, 002 301 227C and 002 301 227E.

Not wishing to do the job twice, just wondered if anyone can identify which one I should be using, as the dimensions seem to be the same.

My other option would be to try to examine the old seal and hopefully find some identifying numbers on that.

Engine is a 136.

Any advice would be helpful.

Same sizes... Don't worry, use either. It's probably just a superceeded part number for the same item.

ETKA catalog mentions that some seals (002 301 227C) had 7mm in height. They went for 8mm as a good measure.

Thanks guy's, your information was a great help.

When I removed the old seal and checked the numbers, it was the same as the 'E' suffix (8mm) seal, so that is what I fitted this evening.

Didn't have the right size socket to hand (as suggested by Haynes, for tapping the seal in) so raked around in the workshop for some alternative object. Found something which was the perfect size to press on the outer part of the seal..........a felly brake caliper piston!!! As a hoarder, I understand the importance of not throwing junk away, just incase it comes in handy, as in this case. ;)

I am now up to the shaft refit stage and the next dilemma. I saved some £'s by buying the big box of assorted driveshaft circlips, but now have to work out where to take the shaft measurement from, so I can select the right one? Am I correct in thinking that it is the outside spline diameter? Think I probably stretched the old circlip when I removed it, or it would be the ideal guide.

You could have used the old seal and a mallet to drive in the new one...

Driveshaft circlip, don't chance it, either reuse the old or buy genuine new ones from skoda, if the fall off inside the gearbox iit would be catastrophic.

if the fall off inside the gearbox iit would be catastrophic.

Why so? Is it because the driveshaft would come out of the gearbox at first curve? Or is it because the circlip would smash the gears?
