Google is starting to pi** me off.

Featured Replies

OK.. I was fine with the odd ad, I could opt out of - but now it's getting ridiculous.

I now have ads in my Android email - is this pi**ing anyone else off?

It has now driven me to the point where I have created an outlook.com account and am willing to delete my gmail account.

I use an ad blocker so wouldn't know!

That would pee me off though!

This is in my email app on my android phone..

Not in a browser..

Is it the gmail app?

I don't have anything showing. I think my ad blocker blocks all ads on the phone whether they're in an app or in a browser.

+4 for my android devices, but I don't even use ad blocker on them come to think of it.

I don't use ad blockers on any of my devices either and the only ad's I've ever seen have been in free, ad-sponsored apps.

As Phil said, are you using a free 3rd party app for email access rather then the gmail app.

No ads in either the Gmail and inbox apps.

What app are you using?

I have an outlook.com account. No ads in emails (ad block deals with the rest) and it will even connect to my desktop Outlook client.

Don't know why MS gets slagged so much these days their offerings are often much more generous and less annoying than Google plus they actually are fighting for privacy in the US courts.

I'm turning into an MS fanboi.

GOOGLE are trying to take over the world. They spy on virtually everything you do. I only have to browse on AMAZON or EBAY, & then sure enough ads pop up on my Gmail screen (& my wife's as well). So now she's got a pretty good idea those crotchless less knickers I was looking at are for her. Don't know whether she'll be disappointed or relieved.

Depending on your trust settings, use private browsing for any shopping on shared devices....

Definitely not be safe for work... or 10am...

As to email client on android, also confirm my gmail android does not show any adverts. But if you're using a webmail based client then yes I do see ads. Who knows so many combinations out there.. I'm increasingly longing to head off grid.

Interestingly I've just found myself back on MS stuff after nearly 10years actively of it.

I know - it feels weird actually praising MS for anything after all these years of messing up.

I actually purely use internet explorer these days (apart from when using the chromecast).

I find any other browsers sluggish, cpu hogs and poor performance on youtube etc.

Make a test. Let's say that you (we) all type the world England, or Greece or what ever you like. But it has to be the same key word. Then try to compare your (our) search results. They will be different for the most you (us).

Probably not if we're all using adblock, cookie block, noscript, notrack etc, all Google has on me is an IP address.

Plus the first page is all sponsored just about.

Indeed!  But the most of the people have no idea about all the things you mentioned.

I've just gone into my "Promotions" box on the gmail app... and there's currently a BT Inifinty ad at the top of the page!

Cheeky beggars!

It sounds like they are only ever in the promotions tab so an easy solution is to turn that tab off.

gmail app -> settings -> account -> inbox categories

I've always had the inbox categories turned off which is why I've never seen any ads.

Sorry - been away..

I'm using the Gmail app on Android - it always shows an ad as the first conversation under the Promotions - but I have seen them under other tabs (never Primary though)..

It's annoying enough to have them on search pages.

I have to +1 all the MS votes on here - so much so, I set up alternative email addresses in Outlook.com for the wife and myself and am transferring everything over.

I am even thinking about buying a subscription to OneDrive and transferring everything from Google to that.

ads based on your gmail is normal- google read through your emails to create ads for you. well known fact. google are and Ad company first and foremost. search, email etc. are there to drive more Ads. everything your do on a google service is tracked across those services and onto other sites that use google adsense,to target more ads at you.

I kind of put up with them in my browser using their email service - but intruding on my phone when using their email.. OK - it's their email so they can do what they want, but I would prefer not to be targeted so intrusively.

I am currently migrating from Gmail, Android, etc and moving over to Microsoft.  We'll see how it goes.

The only thing I am apprehensive about i changing the OS on my phone - as I have lots of applications I've paid for and use.  On the flip side - I write software using Visual Studio - so it might give me an incentive to write my own replacements :)

If you block the right google api's and services (using NoScript), use an adblocker and Do Not Track, then Google wont have much info to use for adverts - or much chance of getting them into view.

One time email address's help as well (Mask Me).

Right now I am missing Google terribly; you dont realise what sites rely on various Google apis (like this one), until all Google services are blocked or severely restricted. Each forum page take 5-10 minutes AT BEST to load, and often I cannot get them to load for hours on end.

All those do is prevent them being shown to you. Google, as with Microsoft, read your email on their servers to build their advertising profile of you, and that you can't stop other than stop using their products and services.

No, they base most of their adverts on where you browse; if you block their various trackers, they cannot see where you are going; if I allow adverts, I get general ones, nothing targeted at me.

The adverts on mobile devices that DO annoy me are the wildly inappropriate ones that turn up in free games aimed at toddlers, but switching to airplane mode stops those.
