Battery charging

Featured Replies

Anyone had any experience of charging the Yeti battery via the 12v sockets in the car? My charger has an adapter to do it, but would like confirmation from someone that it wouldn't mess up the electrics.  Also any other Yeti battery charging tips or experiences?

Thanks

I would have thought it could only 'discharge' via the lighter socket, maybe not though.

Why?

If the circuit is "open" then electrickery will flow both ways, unless there is a blocking diode in the circuit, and there isn't.

I've plugged a solar panel in to the rear socket and it has certainly put power back into the battery. Generally there are only problems if you "reverse feed" high voltage and/or wattage and if you are only using a cigarette lighter plug neither of those will apply.

Go for it.

It should do if the cigarette lighter is on a permanent live circuit, if on an ignition controlled circuit then I think the charging may be blocked if the ignition is off.

They are both continuously live.

I have used a CTEK MXS 5.0 successfully this way.

Hi Merlin, you probably have been told before, but you bear a striking resemblance to the late Sir Richard Attenborough. (When he was still with us of course)

To LeeFignon, energy can flow in both directions and will flow towards the weakest energy source.

Thanks Mac, I will take that as a compliment.

Of course, it was meant as a compliment.  :D

I charge my Yeti battery quite happily via the socket in the boot using an ALDI battery conditioner (a cheap version of the CTEK, but with a max capacity of 3.5A which is still fine overnight).
