The old rear wiper failure....

Featured Replies

OK so the rear wiper has finally given up. Gets bout half way across the window and stops, it will move again of you give it a push. But I'm wondering has anyone ever taken the motor apart and tried to grease it or anything or is it better off just getting new or is it worth hassle of taking it apart and giving it a go at repairing??

Im planning to remove it, plug hole and use g5 / rainx as mine has died.

I cracked one open to grease up once, if I can manage it anyone can, its pretty straightforward, I've heard it can work although who knows for how long because it probably means some corrosion has opened a gap where water will always get through from then on. The one I tried it on was tooooo far gone, but if all it costs is time and grease its got to be worth a try. Your options are; buy used replacement, open and grease before fitting (although it wont be the last one buy, it could last a while if you're lucky); buy new (I got mine off ebay for about £75, still going strong 6 months later); take it out and blank it (which I'll probably do if this one goes within couple of years).

I'm of the opinion that I like having it, especially with the welsh weather, but if the cost of keeping one gets ridiculous, blank it. Cars that have it blanked do look nicer, albeit with a dirtier window!

i'd do a repair - pretty easy to take off and open up, clean off corrision, grease and test

when you refit disconnect the rear washer at the wiper AND tank end - wiper motor should last forever then, small price to pay for lack of wash

I've done mine and it's been fine for over 2 years now. I used vaseline to grease the gears and spindle, but you could use the proper vag stuff if you wanted to .This pdf is for the golf so should only be treated as a rough guide because the washer end is different on the octy, but will give you a rough idea of what is involved - http://vwgolfr32.co.uk/Rear-Wiper-Motor-Repair.pdf

To be honest, if you do it on a good flat work area where you can lay the parts out as they come off, it's almost impossible to reassemble it wrong.
