Indicator auto off.

Featured Replies

Hi.

So. When I turn left the indicator stays on after I straighten the wheel. Guessing the "tap" which is supposed to bring the leaver back to it's original position is broken. I am wondering if it is much hassle to get to it? Do I have to take the steeringwheel off? In that case, how do I do it? I have an airbag, bit scared that it will blow up in my face if I take the wheel off :P And is this fixable with a bit of tape an a toothpick? Or am I going to need new parts? A picture of how it looks like would be much appriciated! :)

Thank you for your help :)

The part you are after is the so called airbag slip ring, which is also a horn switch slip ring and a restoring turn signal switch ring (see attached photo)

If a piece of it is broken, you may glue it back with Superglue or epoxy resin A+B. But you may be lucky and just find something got loose.

Thank you for your reply Ricardo. Very useful manual aswell. Hopefully it's an easy fix, cause the return occasionally works. I also looked on youtube and found a video of a guy removing the steeringwheel on a golf MK3. It is the same procedure in a felicia aswell right?

Yes, it is almost identical.

How many Skoda Felicia are in Norway? Do you have a dedicated forum?

Yes there is a forum I belive, but not nearly as many members as here. I am member of a skoda club page on facebook tho. But that is for all skodas, not just felicia.

I think i definetly need a new airbag slip ring. Today I was not able to indicate right. The handle would not stay in place, and the indicator is therfor unable to stay on. I can hold it up when I am indicating right, but I have to force it upwards, and keep holding it to indicate. No noices coming from the steering wheel itself, but clearly something is broken on the airbag slip ring. Contacted my local dealership today via email to ask for availability and price. If the price is OK I can order from them, otherwise I have to go on ebay :)

Many posts in a row here, but whatever :p

I have been in touch with my local dealer and they charge me 147GBP for a new airbag slip ring. I think that is a bit expensive, so I am going to see if i can find one used from a scrap dealer or something. It is not ideal to run a car on a student budget. :P

I still don't understand why people buy new parts before they see exactly what is broken and if there is a simple fix. Low budgets should force people become more inventive. The need teaches you.

If I were you, I would look behind steering wheel according to the manual I compiled for you. I would assess the damage, took photos, show them in here, ask for further advice. An answer should come in less than a day. There are 3 options:

  • repair it yourself as adviced
  • buy a second hand part from a scrapyard (old Czech parts are sometimes better than new China parts labeled Made in EU)
  • buy new parts

Let me tell you what I do if I have to buy a new part. First I look or ask for the Skoda code of that part from the ETKA catalog. Then I look for the reference price of that part in Czech Republic (best prices are on http://www.cc-autodily.cz). This price is just informative, as we are not fortunate enough to live there. In your case the part costs 2288 Czech Krowns = 84.7 EUR = 66 GBP see here. If local dealers asked 147 GBP I hope you had a F and an Y as reply. Then I would decide how big (read small) my budget is. In case there are no other local dealers, eBay should be your last option. I am fortunate to know a Czech teacher from Prague that teaches American language. He buys what I need and 5-7 days later I get the part.

I have a slip ring  if you want it. The air bag will be safe if you take the battery of and switch the key on to discharge any power left in the system

Hello.

Here's an update:

Because of the cold Norwegian winter, and my lazyness, I have not looked at it before today.

I took the steering wheel off, and that went fine. But I could not see any damage to the airbag slip ring, and even with the slip ring out, I still couldn't move the indicator stalk upwards (indicate right). After assembling everything back together I took it for a test drive. No sounds of slip ring fractioning, and everything was exactly as before. The stalk does not return when indicating left, and I have to hold the stalk in the upwards position to indicate right.

I'm thinking the indicater stalk assembly may be the problem here? What do you think? Take a look at the pictures and see if it makes sense. There is also a movie where I move the stalk around in different positions.

Do you see now why I am against buying parts before finding clear evidence of defects?

You were 2 plastic clips away from taking off the left 'stalk' switch and having a good look at it. If you're skilled you could try to repair it, if not, buy a new one. If you open it, take nice photos along. If you're lucky, there is something stuck inside and all you need to do is to unstuck it, if not have some Superglue handy.

Hehe, yes it is a good point not to buy stuff before you know the cause of defect!

2 clips away huh? I didn't quite understand the assembly. Where are the two clips located? Do I need to remove anything more than you can see in the photos?
