Pressed metal plates

Featured Replies

Hi folks

You know the kind i'm sure.  This will have my cherished plate on it so important to be legal as don't want to lose plate.  However, i would still like a nice surround?  Typically, you can get BMW autohaus or VW blah blah blah on the surrounds but has anyone ever seen a CZ related surround?

Can anyone recommend a good retailer please?

Many thanks, Dave

I got the briskoda surround on my Fabia with some pressed plates from TN signs I think on ebay.

Road legal too

I don't know who told you pressed plates are legal but they are not I know because I reently changed my plates and my father in law is police supt.  Only standard plates are allowed, 3D cna be but frowned upon by police as the tax reading cameras cannot read them.

So long as the font is correct and the backing is reflective then they should be ok.

The ones I have come with the makers name and the British standard number too

Have a look at direct gov number plates   that is the LAW

No - it is not the case at all. Respectfully, you (and by extension your father-in-law who advised you) are grossly misleading other members with your statement regarding pressed metal plates.

Metal pressed number plates are perfectly legal as long as they comply to the same standards as conventional plastic plates (font, reflective material, BS mark, manufacturer details etc). However, most of the metal pressed plates on sale in the UK don't meet the required specs. so they are not legally compliant.

Here is the defacto information on what passes for a legal number plate, taken directly from gov.uk:

Rules for number plates

Your number plates should:

  • be made from a reflective material
  • display black characters on a white background (front plate)
  • display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern

Characters on a number plate can be 3D.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle

Motorcycles and motor tricycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle registered before 1 September 2001 you can also display a number plate at the front, but you don’t have to.

Motorcycle and motor tricycle number plate numbers should be on 2 lines.

Towing a trailer

Your trailer must display the same number plate as the car you’re towing it with. If you’re towing more than one trailer, the number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.

Letter spacing, size and style

The characters on a number plate need to be a certain height and size.

Read leaflet INF104: vehicle registration numbers and number plates - height and size measurement, for more information.

The British Standard for number plates

The British Standard sets out the characteristics of

the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and reflectivity. To meet the British Standard, each number plate must be permanently and legibly marked with the following information.

n The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d) n The name, trademark or other way of identifying the

manufacturer or supplier

n The name and postcode of the supplying outlet

The chaps at Elite Car Care is one of many vendors that can provide fully compliant pressed metal plates: http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/uk-legal-metal-pressed-numberplates.php

Thanks

Chris
