Jaguar XE ,Really liking the look , spec and price.

Just as a bit of a generalisation but the Modern Jag seems to now be the car of choice of Business Trampers that want to have their car inside the back seat of yours, having taken over from Audis as the No.1 UK Tailgater of cars in front following the flow of traffic.

Do the Jags not come with some form of self braking system as standard or is it an expensive option?

They do seem to have auto wipers or the drivers are quick at getting them on because they detect my windscreen wash quite

Jaguars have now become accessible to the 3 Series / A4 brigade - previously they weren't with the XF out of the their range on the company car stakes. Now the XE is released and cheaper they have all switched allegiance.

I originally thought they were really nice cars (XE that is) but on actually looking at one in detail at the JLR dealer, I don't like the  cramped space inside. Don't get me, like Wardy, the fit and finish are excellent on par with other JLR models but clearly it's targeted at the reps.

  • Are we having these sort of discussion about every new car available now?  :p   Complete with Keith's copy and paste efforts!    As for the XE, a good friend of mine has one as a company car since

  • Again, Keith? Really?

Saw one of these on the road this morning.

To me it looked rather humdrum.

Just a normal car with the Jag F-Type mimicking rear lights and a big grille, again to try and link itself to the bigger model.

Without these two things It would have eally blended in to the rest of the other traffic.

It looks like Jaguar have tried to be quite inoffensive with the styling.  Except for the different bumper on all the press shot sporty ones.

Shame really, just another low end car in a range of premium ones trying to tread the balance for blandness to the reps and cost to the company.

I've found it's quite spec dependant and needs to be in the right colour and with R-Sport trim and the right wheels. Otherwise it does look a bit boring.

I think you're right about the styling. Although to be honest most manufacturers in the 'sub premium' saloon sector tend to be doing the same. They all look broadly similar to me, with a few tweaks in the wheel and bumper departments  :)

Think most corporate designs follow the same theme these days. You only have to check out the brand identity. Grills, side profiles back ends etc. Shared components or similar designed component reduce cost of tooling etc for volume product.

Uniqueness usually adds considerably to cost, so I guess there will seem to be a degree of blandness when the aforementioned manufacturing cost are a considerable contributing factor.

That being said we all like different things and consequently it would be a bloody boring world if we all liked the same things.

Each to their own me thinks!

Thought I could see a hint of Jag in the Tesla profile or perhaps I need to go to Specsaver!lol

I think we are in danger of going off on a tangent here, but anyway...

Yes, I didn't buy my Tesla because it's exciting looking.  It looks like a big XF from the back.

I bought it because it's something different from the hum drum cars out there in terms of amazing torque, technology and an overall low ownership cost for a large premium car.

Over three years and 60,000 miles it will cost me less than a Golf R like yours Kieth.

Personally I think EVs should look more like spaceship, but I am probably in the minority there.

Where the XE is just a smaller jag with branded bits stuck on.

I agree with Wardy that wheel choice and model level can help a lot.

And I can't comment on the interior as I am not interested enough in a baby jag to look TBH.

I've seen four so far, all low spec small wheel ones.

Hate the car. It's on of the most unimaginative cars you can buy today. I know let's just beat the 3 series. Yawn

Sounds okay Steve. Any idea what you might get offered for the Cupra?

Just enjoy the reasonable performance with bloody good practicality!

Good deals going as well!!

No idea. Bet it's negative equity though, so I'm not holding out much hope. I'm going for the coffee really, and to set out the framework for an ST290

I think at the moment it's that vs the focus RS or the Giulia. If the latter ever gets here.....

The big advantage being that my finance is with vwuk, so rolling it over is easier than starting new with someone else. Maybe.

We are off to 't north to drive a black vRS230 wagon on Monday, I'm not keen but it's for SWMBO.....

As for the XE we tried one last year, (240ps Petrol) & we had very mixed feelings.

Reasonable quality, no real go, cramped inside, (transmission tunnel in front & no space in the backseat) +

a tiny boot.

More upmarket than a humble Skoda Octy vRS, but since we don't care too much about other peoples opinions,

that's not relevant. As for performance & economy, it felt slowish & would cost us more to run.

Her car is proving surprisingly hard to replace, maybe she should keep it until it dies!

That's a long term review on the Range Rover Sport, Keith.

Think I did raise that issue earlier in the thread as a good friend of mine has been running a 2.0D R-Sport since last July.

And with two car seats and the associated baggage, there's not much space left! Rear quarters do also feel quite cramped.

His previous 320d wasn't much better mind you. It's why I don't buy small 'premium' saloons :)

I had another look at them recently and decided that my Superb had much more room. Yes I'd love a Jaguar but the XE is not for me, it's certainly on par with the A4 and 3 Series which are also small in comparison.

I wouldn't have even needed to look to know that! :P

Nice place to be and a well designed bit of kit, no doubt - just a bit small, especially compared with a Superb

The 240 ps petrol that we tried felt smaller than SWMBO's Octy 2FL, & a lot slower too..

I've just been loaned a new A4 Avant whilst we're having our A6 serviced and I'm surprised by quite how big it is. There's plenty of room for a 6 footer to sit behind a 6 footer with legroom to spare and the boot doesn't look much smaller than our A6 either.

I'm sure it's noticeably bigger inside than either the XE or a 3 series.

The one I've been loaned is an S-Line with the sweeping indicators (rear only I think) and if I'm honest, I don't think I've every used indicators more often than the drive back from the dealers!! It's just a pity you can't see them from inside the car.

It also has the Virtual Cockpit dash display which is nice, though again, if I'm honest, I'm not sure that once you've set it up to your desired option that you would change it very often if at all. It's a shame you can't change the design of the dash to maybe some chrome rimmed Smiths dials from the seventies, or even select the car of your choice and have the dash replicated - knowing Audi, if you could, it would probably be another £500 option!!

All around, it's a very nice place to be and drives very well (think it might be a 150 as it only has a single exhaust on LH side), quiet and comfortable on the S-Line suspension. Looks good in the Daytona Grey too.

Off Topic sorry,

But i already think of the Jaguar F-Pace as the **** Face before even seeing one in the flesh.

No doubt one will be up my jacksy some time soon if the electrics allow the driver to be there, even though i am in a line of traffic and trying to keep a safe stopping distance from the car in front.

I look forward to how sensitive their Auto Wipers are and if the Jags brain then knows it might be too close for even its wonderful brakes and retreats a little from my windscreen washer spray.
