Prototype on the road!

"Most turbocharged petrol and diesel engines found in the Passat are expected to be utilized on the new Superb, including VW's 240 PS 2.0-liter TDI, paired to manual and dual-clutch DSG transmissions driving either the front or all-four wheels"

I only want the stuff in bold from that statement  :sun:

Though most likely it'll be the 240bhp DSG 4x4  , after all, making fast, long lasting and reliable cars like Mk1 used to be (manual V6 TDI FWD) is no longer profitable.

I'm sold on the looks, but then any large wheelbase liftback car that takes full sized spare, has covered underbody and is more reliable than the rest of the market, looks good to me. The question is, will Mk3 be reliable, after Mk1- Mk2 production quality drop...

I agree on the quality issue.  Being part of the VW stable and with the risk of the Superb cannibalising sales of the Passat and certain Audis I fear some dumbing down on parts and build quality.  That's why I always think its a good idea not to be the first to buy a new model.....I'd wait a year or so at least and see what issues might come up.

I think spec like LEDs should be standard from mid range up.  I know its the 'budget' VW brand but that's the whole point of the current model, more for less. Also, they will need to keep an eye on prices next time as they are edging up all the time (at the top end) to 'premium' cars

I'm not too keen on LEDs, given that VW and other makers still insist on making headlamps that cannot fully switch RHD-LHD. I'd rather have xenon projectors (factory or retrofit) switched to "flat beam", than LEDs that point the Z-beam downwards when abroad. Actually, that is my biggest gripe about Mk3 generation (Octy, Rapid, next Superb) headlights, bulb ones switched back to reflectors from projectors, you need at least factory xenons if you want to be free of "beam benders".

Also, LED's are unlikely to last much longer than VW's defined "lifetime", which e.g. in case of PS fluid and gearbox oil I can judge to be under 5 years. Basically, they'll be excellent for as long as your car is in warranty, or until the first fender bender involving headlamps.

I'd like to see for once SUK offering full options list as e.g. in Ireland, so that those who need parking heater, cloth heated seats, a rough road package, or LEDs for that matter, can select them freely when ordering a factory new car.

Any ideas of when this will hit U.K. roads? I love our Mk2 Combi but we missed the Mk2FL by two months so straight away it was the old look.

I still love her though, after 19 months all I've had to fix was a blown brake light bulb.

And more;

No earlier than May, Geneva motor show is in March

Mk3 looks are certainly better than a Mondeo

Official presentation in Prague mid February.

More interior and boot space than the S2!

From this angle it looks quite imposing!  75mm longer wheelbase than current MkII.  Those awkward lines seem to have disappeared as well around the back and front end.

I think the echos of the back hump are still there, this is to ensure sufficient rear headroom. But I agree it looks much better than Mk2 humpback(sorry twindoor :p ) already.

"We tried two petrols and a diesel, the latter a 188bhp 2.0 TDI that was arguably the most relevant to the UK market, despite having four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. "

If they don't intend to sell 190bhp manual gearbox FWD version, I'll save a lot of money

Photo #6 in AE review shows clearly an additional stalk under indicator stalk. Presumably this is cruise control?

Whatever it is, I have a strong impression that Skoda designed a car for tall drivers, only for some midget to show up at the end and put this extra stalk there to hit you in the knee every time you get in/out :p ... what's wrong with buttons+slider on the indicator?

That's well spotted!  It will have adaptive cruise control but surely they won't need a separate stalk for that like older cars do?  It is a prototype however so maybe the dash is more of a mock-up or with bits taken from older VW models.  The stalk could be something related to the testing of the car?  Externally its all looks to be going in the right direction though.

Hopefully there will be some sort of electric opening/closing function for the hatch with variable level opening - like the Audi A7 - as that hatch will be quite awkward otherwise!

Similar shape of lights Superb/Vison C. :)

The Audi A7 I drove the other day had a separate stalk for the cruise IIRC. Was strange as everything I've had/driven hasnt needed an additional stalk. I guess with all the new tech something needed to give.

So I wasn't too far off.

I hope the rear is how I was hoping towards.

Retaining a nod to the characteristic to the Skoda rear light 'C'.

Please, please be a hatchback, better still a twindoor, but not a saloon only!

Yes I think hatch only this time. No twindoor though

Come on the estate!

When will you be revealed, Geneva also, at least some pictures anyway?

I hope its earlier than early 2016 as they say in one of the reviews as I will be the first in the que for it.

Loved my last two Superbs, and even tho I like my current Octy III VRS, its just I think the Superb fitted my demeanour better.

Come on Skoda, stop faffing around, get on with it!

Sorry, when I said hatch only I meant hatch only as opposed to the twindoor. Obviously there will be an estate too. VW unveiled the saloonand estate simultaneously so hopefully Skoda do the same.
